On Wednesday, Watertown dentist Dr. Peter M. Virga performed a root canal on Annie, a river otter from the Thompson Park Zoo (Watertown, N.Y.). The 4-year-old otter cracked three of her canine teeth when she bit into her metal transport carrier en route to a recent veterinary appointment.
Zoo officials said using a dentist rather than a veterinarian allowed them a better chance to preserve the functionality of her teeth, used for eating and defense.
They later said the procedure at the North Country Animal Health Center was a success, and that Annie was recovering well.
