- Description
- Dr. Anthony Fauci’s Senate hearing was "a witch hunt" and "McCarthyism," The New Yorker's Susan Glasser told Washington Week moderator Jeffrey Goldberg on Friday.
Fauci, who helped lead the federal government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic under Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden, invoked the Fifth Amendment and refused to answer questions during the GOP-led hearing Wednesday about the origins of the virus and the government's pandemic response. Sen. Rand Paul subpoenaed Fauci to appear before the committee.
"I found it very painful to watch, as I'm sure many people did," Glasser said of the hearing. "The person who was accountable ultimately for America's failed initial handling of the pandemic in 2020 was someone named Donald Trump."

- A growing number of Republicans are publicly sharing their frustration with the Trump administration as the war with Iran continues.
Puck News' Leigh Ann Caldwell says Republicans on Capitol Hill are not happy with the "lack of answers" from the administration about the war, including the objectives and information on funding requests.
"There's still lots of questions about what the money is going to be used for, how much specifically is needed, how much will be needed in the future," Caldwell told guest moderator Vivian Salama.
"When members of Congress are asked to fund billions and billions of dollars, when their constituents are the ones who are being put on the line for this, patience obviously wears quite thin," she added. "But, I will say, it is not manifesting in a rebuke to the president."

- It is "hard to say" what the Trump administration's strategy is for Iran, the New York Times' David Sanger says, as the U.S. paused its bombing campaign.
"It's really hard to say at this point, ... if you don't have much of a strategy going in, it's hard to develop one in the middle of a war," Sanger told guest moderator Vivian Salama on Friday.
Both the U.S. and Iran paused strikes over the weekend after nearly two weeks of attacks and escalating tensions. Regional officials said Monday that mediators are working to bring the U.S. and Iran back to the negotiations.

- President Donald Trump is “very concerned about the outcomes in 2026,” The Dispatch’s Stephen Hayes told Washington Week moderator Jeffrey Goldberg.
Hayes suggested that Trump’s primetime address last Thursday was less about the 2020 election and election security and more about “what’s to come,” setting up what we might see from Trump moving forward.
“He doesn't want to be impeached. He believes that if Democrats take the House, they will move to impeach him quickly,” Hayes said. “He's done a number of things in his past that suggest he's very open to interfering in the elections in the months to come.”

- Description
- President Donald Trump’s primetime speech last Thursday was both about “personal vindication” and a larger campaign to “gain as much control over American elections as possible,” MS NOW’s Laura Barrón-López told Washington Week moderator Jeffrey Goldberg.
“This was about him trying to, again, just convince the public that his lie about the 2020 election being stolen is true. That was him. He is fixated on 2020,” Barrón-López said.
She noted that, constitutionally, states have the power to hold elections. But that hasn't stopped Trump from using federal agencies to try to take control from the states.
Trump's "big message was, look, our elections are so insecure that, essentially, he needs to gain more control over it," Barrón-López said.

Moderator Jeffrey Goldberg asked The Atlantic’s Anne Applebaum if there evidence that U.S. elections are in danger from foreign interference or "other nefarious players that Donald Trump believes exist out there."
"There's no evidence at all, and actually, he didn't produce any,” Applebaum told Goldberg, noting that there's no evidence another foreign nation has changed votes, affected voting machines or altered an election’s outcome.
“There's a series of institutions that have been created, going back decades actually, that are designed to prevent foreign interference and other interference, and actually the Trump administration [has] pretty systematically dismantled them," Applebaum added.

"For the previous 15 years, just the mere thought of the United States striking Iran, even in a single bout of airstrikes, was considered to be one of the major debates that engaged foreign policy over and over again," Glasser told Goldberg.
"And yet Donald Trump just sort of casually now goes back to war, and the world just sort of shrugs its shoulders to a certain extent."

Harris added that with Platner, Democrats were looking for the “prototypical candidate” who could win back isolated white male voters they may have thought they lost to President Donald Trump, “as opposed to sort of understanding a policy preference that voters might be thinking of.”

"But how he gained so much support is he is charismatic, he was a good messenger and he had the message that the progressive left, the Bernie Sanders wing of the party, is really looking for," Caldwell added.
