- Description
- Just a year after Donald Trump’s return to power, cracks are forming inside MAGA. The movement that once felt unstoppable is now plagued by infighting, disillusionment, and growing criticism of Trump himself. In this Reporter Extra, Vox senior correspondent Andrew Prokop, who recently reported a story on the fractures within the MAGA movement, goes deeper and explores how the defeat of “wokeness” has left MAGA without a common enemy — and why that victory may be accelerating internal conflict and threatening the future of the coalition.

- Description
- The town of Oswego, New York, has three nuclear power plants within 10 miles — and it wants another one. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul recently announced a commitment to add a gigawatt of nuclear power to the New York state grid, partially to meet the electricity demands of the booming AI industry. And Oswego is vying to be chosen as a site for this new power plant.
To find out more about why Oswego is so eager for nuclear — and what would happen next if it’s chosen — Vox video producer Nate Krieger traveled there to meet with the mayor of Oswego and see the nuclear power plants up close.
There are a lot of benefits to adding more nuclear energy to the grid: The average US nuclear power station can provide enough electricity to support 1.4 million homes. Nuclear power operates 24/7 and doesn’t generate carbon emissions or traditional air pollution. Plus, these plants create hundreds of jobs.
But disasters like Three Mile Island, Chernoby...

Every December, we’re told to be merry and stay positive. But a lot of us don’t feel that way. And when we don’t, the pressure to be happy makes everything worse. Sadness feels like failure. Grief feels like a personal mistake. Depression becomes something to hide.
But what if dark moods aren’t problems to fix? What if they’re part of being human?
Today’s guest is philosopher Mariana Alessandri, author of Night Vision, a book about how to honor the emotions we usually try to outrun. It’s not a celebration of sadness, but Alessandri instead challenges the culture of toxic positivity and the idea that happiness is something we’re supposed to choose on command.

The world is filled with injustice and wrongdoing, and to live in the world — to not be consumed by anger — forgiveness is necessary. At least that’s what we’re told over and over again: By forgiving, we can set ourselves free.
But is there a cost to forgiveness? Are we forgiving too quickly and too often?
Today’s guest is philosopher Myisha Cherry, whose book Failures of Forgiveness critiques our cultural obsession with forgiving those who have done us wrong. She’s not against forgiveness — that would be weird — but she says we ought to be more intentional about why we do it, more aware that the expectation to practice forgiveness often lands on the most vulnerable people, and more concerned about what gets lost when we treat forgiveness as the only path to hea...

- Why we need so much lithium
- Date posted
- Description
- Lithium is being called the new “white gold.”
In 2022, the price of this metal soared to nearly $70,000 per metric ton. Fueled by the global rise in electric vehicles and the proliferation of lithium-ion batteries, we now use nearly 28 times more lithium per capita than in the 1990s. After China, the US is the world’s second-largest consumer of lithium, yet it mines less than one percent of the global supply.
To rectify this lack of domestic lithium, the US government approved a $2.26 billion loan in October 2025 to Lithium Americas, a Canadian company developing Thacker Pass in northern Nevada, the largest lithium deposit ever discovered in the United States. But this major investment may have come a little too late.
In this video, we’ll explore how lithium is fueling the “white gold rush” in Nevada, whether or not the government’s investment in Thacker Pass will pay off, and what the history of mining ghost towns can tell us about ...

- The Department of Homeland Security recently released a spree of ads recruiting for new hires at ICE. And those ads circle around one strange idea: that America is a damsel who needs strong, powerful men to protect her.
In this Reporter Extra, Vox senior culture correspondent Constance Grady unpacks the secret history behind ICE’s iconography. They’re pulling from some old and shameful American archetypes — and those archetypes come with racist and misogynistic baggage. To fully understand the story ICE is telling, we need to go all the way back to The Birth of a Nation, and all the way forward to the present-day trad wives on social media.
ICE is trying to claim the power to decide who gets to be a part of America, and their ads give us a glimpse into who they believe America is.

- How to make life’s toughest decisions #shorts
- Date posted
- Description
- If you’re relying on a simple pro/con list to make some of the biggest decisions of your life, you’re selling yourself short. As the philosopher Ruth Chang points out, life-altering choices are rarely straightforward, and often neither option is superior. Instead of trying to quantify the unquantifiable, consider who you want to become — and how each path might shape your character, your values, and your future. #philosophy #proscons

- Should salmon farming be our future? #shorts
- Date posted

- Description
- Is it possible to eat meat and still care about this planet? Many have argued that aquaculture — or fish farming — is one of the most sustainable ways we can consume animal protein, since it requires less land use. It’s currently the quickest-growing form of food production in the world. But how exactly does it work? And is it really the best path forward? To find out more, Vox video producer Nate Krieger did a deep dive on salmon aquaculture.

- We all know what awkwardness feels like. It's that jolt of discomfort when the social script breaks down, and no one knows what to do next. But what if awkwardness isn’t a flaw to fix but a window into how we live together?
Sean’s guest today is Alexandra Plakias, associate professor of philosophy at Hamilton College and author of Awkwardness: A Theory. They talk about why awkwardness isn’t a personal problem but a social one, how power and privilege shape who gets to be awkward, and why our fear of discomfort often keeps us from saying what really matters.

In recent decades, Friendsgiving has emerged as the go-to choice as an additional event or complete alternative to Thanksgiving.
It can be tough during the holidays with the pressures of trying to get everything just right to present yourself as a well-adjusted adult hosting a Thanksgiving dinner, or to be present with family that may think they know what’s best for you. Friendsgiving has opened the door to do things a little bit differently. The intention is to have a laid-back, low-pressure (or over-the-top, totally up to the host) potluck-style dinner with friends and other people in your chosen community — because as cheesy as it sounds, friends are the new family.
Friendsgiving was seemingly plucked from obscurity in the 2010s. While its exact origins are debated, it...

- Description
- “In space, no one can hear you scream.” At least according to the movie Alien from 1979.
But there actually is a way to listen to space. Astronomers use things called “sonifications,” where they translate data into sound. This visualization is a sonification made by scientists at NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory of the center of the Milky Way. The piano represents infrared light, the violin represents visible light, and the glockenspiel represents X-ray light. And scientists we spoke to say listening to things like this can sometimes be better than looking at images for noticing new phenomena in space. #sound #space #nasa #violin #piano #glockenspiel #unexplainable #podcast

- Earth’s population is growing. We’re expected to have 2 billion more mouths to feed by 2050. But how can we feed all those people in a way that is still sustainable and ethical? It’s currently the quickest-growing form of food production in the world. But how exactly does it work? And is it really the best path forward?
To find out more, Vox video producer Nate Krieger went down the rabbit hole on salmon aquaculture. Salmon is currently the most popular fish in the US: The average American consumes 3.2 pounds of salmon annually. And over 70% of that salmon comes from farms, totalling 3 million tons of salmon a year.
To understand the impact that the salmon industry is having on our planet and our future, and on the salmon themselves, we spoke to industry insiders, marine biologists, and fish welfare exp...

Tinnitus isn’t always detected in a hearing test. Recent studies have shown that it might be a problem called hidden hearing loss. Trump is suddenly rolling back efficiency rules, making it harder for many industries to do business while raising costs for ordinary Americans. And no one knows this better than the US auto industry, which has switched back and forth between competing environmental regulations for over a decade.
