- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy speaking in Kyiv Thursday said it was not "pleasant" that U.S. President Donald Trump had phoned Russian President Vladimir Putin before him, adding the U.S. president had wanted to speak with both leaders simultaneously.
Trump on Wednesday set in motion a diplomatic charge aimed at ending the nearly 3-year-old war in Ukraine and laid down what appears to be his condition for continued U.S. support.
"I'm backing Ukraine, but I do want security for our money," he said in the Oval Office, when asked by reporters about his stance on the conflict sparked by the 2022 Russian invasion.

“We will begin by calling President [Volodymyr] Zelenskyy, of Ukraine, to inform him of the conversation, something which I will be doing right now,” Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social. “I have asked Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Director of the CIA John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Ambassador and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, to lead the negotiations which, I feel strongly, will be successful.”
Trump did not specify what the terms might be to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict. But Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, in Germany Wednesday for a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, ruled out a key demand by Ukraine’s: eventual membership in NATO.
