- Three men have been sentenced to between 14 and 15 years in prison for the manslaughter of Sligo pensioner Tom Niland. The 75-year-old was attacked and robbed at his home in January 2022 and died in hospital 20 months later.
During sentencing, the court heard how the men carried out a violent assault that left Mr Niland with catastrophic injuries. The three were convicted of manslaughter and aggravated burglary following a lengthy investigation by Gardaí.
Speaking after the sentencing, Mr Niland’s cousin Michael Walsh described the pain and devastation the family has endured, saying Tom’s death has left “a void that can never be filled”. He also spoke of the lasting impact the attack has had on the wider Sligo community.
