- This year’s newcomers face a vexing learning curve to be game-ready to play the pack in time for the opener, and getting so many new players up to speed defensively is one of Interim UVA basketball coach Ron Sanchez’s biggest challenges.
“It's not just about the system, it's about the details within the system,” Sanchez said Monday. “But I think guys are doing a great job of picking things up. There's a lot of energy. They understand that this program is built on defense.”
An overhaul of the offense, one that starts with getting the ball up the court more quickly, was already in the works all summer. It’s a shift that Sanchez and his fellow assistants had put time and effort into crafting and installing.

- A tearful Tony Bennett announced his retirement from college coaching Friday, less than three weeks from the start of his 16th season at Virginia, labeling himself ill equipped to navigate the current climate of college athletics.
“When I looked at myself and I realized, I’m no longer the best coach to lead this program,” Bennett said. “If you’re going to do it, you’ve got to be all in. You’ve got to have everything. And if you do it half-hearted it’s not fair to the university and those young men.”
Bennett finished 364-136 with Virginia, leading the program to two ACC Tournament titles, six ACC regular-season championships, 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and, most famously, the 2019 national championship.
“I’ve given everything I can for 15 years,” Bennett said.

- The Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel Expansion Project reached another milestone Wednesday as Mary, the affectionate name for the massive tunnel boring machine doing much of the heavy lifting, broke through onto the North Island, marking roughly the halfway point of her journey.
Now, Mary will have to be turned around to dig back towards Norfolk to create the second tunnel of what will be two new eastbound lanes on I-64, a process that is expected to take about five months. This first tunnel took about 51 weeks and the Virginia Department of Transportation is aiming to use the lessons learned to make the return trip quicker, in about 11 months, according to Ryan Banas, project director for VDOT.
