- Date posted
- Description
- Legendary Magnum photographer Stuart Franklin talks to us about his famous ‘Tank Man’ image of a single man standing in front of a line of tanks, symbolising the uprising that happened at Tiananmen Square in 1989. It’s become an ubiquitous image in the West of the pro-democracy protests, but in China it’s like it’s been airbrushed out of history. Even getting the roll out of China was tricky, it was smuggled out in a box of tea by a French student heading for Paris. Stuart Franklin talks us through the events leading up to the photo and how it went on to be considered one of the greatest images of the 20th Century.
When you are on the front line, picking up a camera can often result in an image that immortalises a moment in time. From pictures captured during armed conflict to anti-facist protests, global pandemics to the start of a revolution - iconic photos reveal exactly what happened there and then. In this Developing News series, VICE interviews photographe...

Polly Verity is a “paper sculptor” from Wales who has enchanted her followers with her remarkable ability to create intricate, three-dimensional works of art using mainly plain, white paper.
In the third episode of “The Mind’s Eye”, we’ll follow Polly as she brings a whole new dimension to the age-old art of origami.

- Description
- VICE World News host Zing Tsjeng explores how the City of London and its financial institutions profited from slavery in America long after the slave trade was abolished.
Empires of Dirt is a show about Europeans getting rich at the expense of everyone else. VICE World News host Zing Tsjeng uncovers the ugly history of the European colonial empires they don’t teach us in schools.
Countries around the world were looted for their treasures, people were oppressed and exploited and European powers relentlessly profited. The far-reaching repercussions of colonialism are all around us, from our financial institutions to the food we have in our cupboards at home - and it’s about time we took notice.

- Racist slurs. Death threats. Fear. As Americans continue to debate the role of police in society, police are also having these same conversations amongst themselves – but most civilians will never hear them.
Some officers speak up about improper conduct, only to be retaliated against. Others never say anything. Three former police officers told us their stories – what they saw, why they spoke up, or didn’t – and what they think about what’s happening now.

- The Great MDMA Drought and Its Deadly Consequences | The War on Drugs
- Date posted
- Description
- In The War On Drugs Show, we examine the social implications of prohibition worldwide.
Any attempt to shut down the trade in drugs such as heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, ketamine or weed invariably sets off a chain of events that just makes things worse, leaving a trail of death, illness, violence, slavery, addiction, crime and inequality across the globe. Everyone loses – except, in a weird kind of way, the drugs themselves.
When huge quantities of the safrole oil required to make MDMA went up in smoke in southeast Asia in the late 2000s, the global ecstasy deficit was filled with a deadly replacement: PMA. The result? Hundreds of deaths.

- Description
- With close to 8.5 million trucks plying on Indian roads, the trucking industry is India’s backbone when it comes to the supply of essential services. Indian trucks are also known for another thing — their fantastical art! For truckers in India, having a kaleidoscope of colours, art, slogans and symbols is almost a rite of passage. The bulky body of the truck becomes a mode of expression, not only for them but also for many truck artists in the country. VICE meets Nafees Ahmad Khan, a truck artist from Indore, a city in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. We also meet truck drivers stationed at Nafees’ workshop to understand why they get their trucks custom painted and what the iconography means for them.
