- J.E. Jones Elementary School in Cudahy was evacuated Thursday morning after reports of a suspicious package outside the building. Police, the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office and an FBI explosives team responded to the scene. Authorities determined the package posed no threat to the community.
The Cudahy Police Department said the evacuation was carried out "in an abundance of caution." Students were first moved to the nearby Cudahy United Methodist Church before being transported by Milwaukee County Transit buses to Cudahy High School. Traffic was diverted away from the school while police secured the building.

“You guys can, like, sing ‘I’ve Been Working on the Railroad’ or something," Pat Witkowski said to her fellow volunteers working on the Ice Age Trail.
Witkowski leads the group Blazing Babes. They build trails, remove invasive species, and put up blazes, which are these yellow trail markers. That’s how they got their name.
“I don't think very many of the guys in our troop want to hang out with us. I mean, who wants to talk about menopause?” Witkowski said with a laugh.

- Koi fish street art can be found all around Milwaukee, painted by artist Jeremy Novy. Heather Ladage commissioned Novy to paint some on her street.
The originals were completed in October, but when the snow cleared, black paint had appeared on them. Not thinking much of it, Novy repainted them the past Sunday. By Monday morning, all three had been spray-painted over in green with an anti-LGBTQ slur underneath.

Amaiyah Hill says she woke up to the sound of smoke alarms and quickly realized the home was on fire.
Her grandmother, Sonjra Terry, was at work when she got the call.
"My heart dropped to the floor," Terry said.
Terry, who had just started her shift with the City of Milwaukee, says she could not reach her granddaughter by phone.

- At the same time the Watertown High School Wind Symphony took the stage Monday night, the school board that decided to ban one of its songs held a regularly scheduled meeting of its own.
Last Tuesday, the board voted 7-1 to ban a song called ‘A Mother of a Revolution. The composer says the instrumental piece was inspired by a trans woman who was an agitator during the 1969 Stonewall riots.
During a three-hour school board meeting on Monday, the board didn’t say a word about the controversy. Instead, attendees were referred to the board president’s news release that explained the board’s decision.

- A new Milwaukee County report shows suicides among Black residents, men, older adults, and firearm-related deaths all rose after the COVID-19 pandemic. For Sylvester Jackson, those numbers are not just data — they are personal.
Jackson knows the weight of that reality firsthand. Years of trauma, abuse, addiction, and loss pushed him to a breaking point while serving time in prison.
"When you get so far down to where you feel there's no hope, the only thing left for you is to just call it a day," Jackson said.
That hopelessness eventually led Jackson to attempt to take his own life behind bars. Another inmate saw what was happening and helped save his life.
Today, Jackson runs Believers for Change, helping people facing trauma, addiction, and mental health struggles.

Principal Dr. Richard Watkins made it a priority to find a coach who could develop students on and off the court. He chose Freddie Riley.
The stakes were high. The season before Riley's arrival, the basketball program was canceled because players were academically ineligible — something Watkins said was unacceptable for a school with Vincent's history.

Voigt said the decision was disheartening, particularly because families had already been given the option to opt in or out of having their children perform the song.
