- Description
- Germany's Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said on Tuesday (March 5) one of the participants on the military call on Ukraine intercepted by Russia had dialed in via a non-secure line and disciplinary measures were being looked into.
That specific participant had dialed in from Singapore where an air show was taking place.
Such an event attracted high-ranking European military officials, making it a target for Russian security services, Pistorius told reporters.
Russia had likely intercepted the military call via widespread surveillance, not a spy or targeted surveillance, Pistorius said.

- China gives warning on "Taiwan separatism" at People's Congress
- Date posted
- Description
- China’s ruling Communist Party issued a bullish response to western critics today, ruling out major changes to economic or defence policies despite clashes over its massive trade surplus and Taiwan.
At the opening of the annual session of China’s parliament, the National People’s Congress, the prime minister Li Qiang made clear that he expected the economy to recover without major government intervention despite a property market crash and high youth unemployment. International bankers and analysts had been calling for a stimulus package, particularly to increase consumer spending.
The defence budget will increase by 7.2 per cent, the same as last year but well above the 5 per cent target rate for annual economic growth, as Beijing continues to modernise its armed forces and, western analysts say, prepares for the possibility of war over the Taiwan Strait.

- What is Super Tuesday?
- Date posted

- Description
- The biggest day of the 2024 presidential primary season is here as voters in 16 states and one US territory cast their ballots on Super Tuesday.
A total of 865 Republican delegates and 1,420 Democratic delegates are up for the taking from coast to coast on March 5. In both cases that is more than two thirds of the delegates needed to secure the presidential nomination.
On the Republican side, the former president Donald Trump will seek to push his sole remaining rival Nikki Haley out of the race, having won every major match-up this season so far.
On the Democratic side, President Biden is expected to win easily. His only challengers, Dean Phillips and Marianne Williamson, neither of whom have won any delegates so far, could well be readying to drop their fledgling campaigns for White House.

Famine is now gripping the besieged Gaza Strip as aid supplies, already sharply curtailed since the start of the war, have dwindled to barely a trickle over the past month.
Whole swathes of the territory are completely cut off from food. Gaza's few functioning hospitals, already overwhelmed by the wounded, are now filling with children starving to death.
Ceasefire talks between Hamas and mediators broke up on Tuesday in Cairo with no breakthrough, with just days left to halt fighting in time for the start of Ramadan.

- Donald Trump can run for presidential election, Supreme Court rules
- Date posted
- Description
- The US Supreme Court set Donald Trump on track for a week of momentous victories by overruling a state ban on standing again for president before a potential clean sweep of Super Tuesday votes.
America’s top court unanimously decided that Colorado could not disqualify Trump under the Fourteenth Amendment of the constitution, which bars from office those who “engaged in insurrection or rebellion”. It ruled that individual states did not have the power to make such a judgment.
This removed the main legal obstacle to his campaign for re-election a day before 15 Republican state primary votes across five time zones, when he could rack up a practically unassailable lead over his last rival, Nikki Haley. She picked up her first primary win at the weekend in Washington DC after nine defeats to Trump but opinion polls put her behind everywhere else on the map.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Greensboro, North Carolina, Trump appeared to be suggesting, as he has in the past, that Democrats are hoping to convert migrants who enter the country illegally into reliable voters, and "establish a new base of power that gives them control for generations”.
The former U.S. president also called the influx of migrants an “invasion” and said Biden would “turn our public schools into migrant camps”.
Trump was campaigning in North Carolina and Virginia ahead of their primaries on Tuesday (March 5), two of 16 nominating contests that will be held across the country that likely will push him close to clinching the Republican presidential nomination.

Neil Basu, the former head of the UK’s counterterrorism policing network, said preventing people from legitimately voicing their opposition to government policy over the Israel-Gaza conflict would “fuel more extremism” and drive those on the fringes to look “somewhere else”.
Basu said: “The whole point of a protest is to influence public policy. The whole point of terrorism is ‘I can’t influence you in any other way, so I’m going to use violence’.
“If we choose to suppress protest, you are fuelling more extremism — I have no doubt about that. Protest is a way of venting … as long as it’s not criminal, we’ve got to allow it in a liberal democracy.”

Crowds gathered outside the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God Soothes My Sorrows in the southern Maryino district of the capital, where a service was held.
Inside, video showed Navalny’s mother approaching his body in an open casket in which the campaigner’s body, dressed in a suit and tie, was laid on a brocaded piece of white cloth and covered with red and white flowers. Other relatives and friends held candles.

- Why are Britain's music venues dying? #musicindustry #livemusic #music #uk
- Date posted
- Description
- More than 120 grassroots music venue closures were identified in 2023 by the Music Venue Trust. That is a 16% fall in the number of venues across the UK. Over 4,000 jobs have been lost as a result.
As well as being important in the local communities, grassroots music venues are widely acknowledged as the ‘research and development’ department of the music industry. But the economical impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and associated restrictions, increased energy prices, noise complaints and developments are making it hard for these venues to survive.
In December 2023 one of the best-known grassroots music venues in the UK, Moles in Bath, filed for insolvency stating that the rise in costs and overheads and the impact of the cost-of-living crisis have made it impossible to continue.

- George Galloway wins Rochdale by-election

- Description
- George Galloway has won the Rochdale by-election after one of the most divisive campaigns in years.
The Workers Party for Britain leader gained almost 40 per cent of the vote and had a 5,697 majority over his closest rival, David Tully — an independent candidate who only decided to run the day before nominations closed.
Labour withdrew support for its candidate, Azhar Ali, after a recording emerged in which he claimed Israel was complicit in the terrorist attacks of October 7.
The by-election was to decide the replacement for the veteran Labour MP Sir Tony Lloyd, who died in January.

- Chief Constable Gavin Stephens, the chairman of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, said that Wayne Couzens "should never have been a police officer".
At a press conference following the publishing of an independent inquiry's findings, Sir Mark Rowley, the commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, added that the force was now "relentless" in its efforts to improve the culture in the Met Police.
The independent inquiry, led by Lady Elish Angiolini, uncovered evidence of Couzens’s alleged sexual offending including an attempted rape, a kidnapping, indecent exposure, a preference for extreme and violent pornography and unmanaged debts dating back more than 25 years before Everard’s murder.

- Israel’s military denied the claim, saying that dozens of deaths happened during a stampede at about 4am when thousands of people had surrounded the lorries and were trampled in a rush to loot supplies. They said that some of those killed were run over by the aid vehicles.
An IDF official said that a separate, “limited” incident had happened hundreds of yards north of the stampede near the north-south checkpoint crossing, where people “posing a threat” had approached Israeli troops only after the lorries had passed on the coastal road.

Republicans said “contradictory” statements by President Biden’s 54-year-old son meant he should undergo public questioning this year.
Democrats called it a “deep-sea fishing expedition” designed to “humiliate the president” in the run-up to the election.
Hunter Biden spent about seven hours being questioned on his business activities and denied that his father was involved, as Republicans in the House of Representatives allege.

- Emma Caldwell's family: the police have "blood on their hands"
- Date posted
- Description
- Emma Caldwell's family released a statement after Iain Packer, a prolific and violent criminal who preyed on vulnerable women for decades, was found guilty of her murder.
Her family blames the police's "toxic culture of misogyny" for failing to listen to women who had come forward about Packer's behaviour.
The 27-year-old former stable girl was found dead in remote woodland in South Lanarkshire in April 2005.
Packer, a motorcycle enthusiast and Rangers FC supporter, had denied strangling Caldwell and concealing her body.
But on Wednesday a jury found Packer, 51, guilty of her murder.
He was also found guilty of 32 other charges against a total of 22 women. The offences included 11 rapes and multiple sexual assaults.
