- At least 16 people were killed when a world-famous funicular railcar derailed and overturned in Lisbon, Portugal, on Wednesday.
A carriage on Glória Funicular, which connects Lisbon’s downtown near the Restauradores Square with its upper quarter, known as the Bairro Alto, derailed at around 6:15 p.m. local time (1:15 p.m. E.T.), overturning onto its side and crashing into a building. Lisbon’s Civil Protection Agency earlier reported 17 people had died, though they later revised the number to 16. At least 21 others were injured in the crash, including several of whom are in critical condition.

Speaking to reporters from the Oval Office, Trump cast D.C. as a crime-ridden city up until he declared a public safety emergency in the nation’s capital and federalized the city’s police force three weeks ago. “Now it’s considered a totally safe zone,” he said. City data showed that violent crime in D.C. was already falling significantly before the Administration’s operation, but does indicate a further decline in crime during the takeover. Taking credit for the recent drop, Trump suggested sending National Guard troops to other major cities, too.

- At age three, Rodney Lomax was stranded for five days living on an interstate overpass near the New Orleans Superdome with his grandmother and neighbors after the levees broke, which flooded his home following Hurricane Katrina.
His grandmother, Rhonda Lomax, shielded him from what horrors she could. In the wake of the storm, she made sure her grandson received therapy and proper support as he began to show signs of posttraumatic stress syndrome. Twenty years later, Rodney still remembers the fear he felt in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina—as well as the protection and love that saved him.
Photojournalist Kathleen Flynn first met Rodney and Rhonda on the interstate overpass in 2005. She reconnected with them in 2010 and has produced several stories about their lives since.
