One of these was a gorgeous blue lagoon at the Spring River Resort, which is located about 3km from the well-known Konglor Cave in Khounkham district.

- Vientiane residents who love the natural world and are in the mood for adventure on a getaway weekend should put the Rock Viewpoint on their bucket list.
This new visitor attraction is located in the Phou Hinboun National Protected Area in Khounkham district, Khammuan province, and is also part of the famous Thakhaek Loop. It has been dubbed “The Peak of the Loop”.
About 260km south of Vientiane, the Rock Viewpoint officially opened to the public last month and went viral on Lao social media.
A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to experience the awesomeness of the place for myself. Driving from Vientiane it took about four hours to get there passing through Pakxan and Pakkading districts in Borikhamxay province and then turning left at Road No. 8 at the Lak Xao junction where the road leads to the Vietnamese border.

- No case of the new coronavirus (nCoV) has been confirmed on Lao soil, Minister of Health Associate Professor Dr Bounkong Sihavong told a media conference yesterday.
He dismissed news circulating on social media, which suggested that there was a case and the patient was being treated in a Vientiane hospital, as ‘fake news’.
“So far, no patient has been confirmed as being infected with the new virus in Laos,” he told the media when speaking at his office.
There have been suspected cases, but tests had all proved negative, he added.
The minister said that a Chinese woman and her child from Wuhan in Hubei province, China, where the 2019-nCoV virus originated and caused a pneumonia outbreak, arrived in Laos on January 20 suffering from headaches. But tests did not give a positive diagnosis.
“After the tests were negative, they asked for permission to travel to Luang Prabang. We are now monitoring them,” he said.

- There are a lot of wonderful places in Laos for trekking – some are famed while others are little-known and waiting to be explored. The Nam Ha National Protected Area (NPA) in Luang Namtha province is one such place. Although well known to locals, this wonderful place is yet to be discovered by tourists.
For me, it turned out to be the best place for trekking and the perfect location to experience the bounty and beauty of nature.
I am a regular trekker and have been to many parts of Laos and to other countries, but trekking in the Nam Ha NPA was a special, almost unforgettable experience and exceeded my expectations.

- Construction of the 414-km Laos-China railway from the Chinese border to Vientiane is progressing well and is now 78.2 percent complete.
According to a report issued on September 30 by the project management committee, all of the main structures such as tunnels, bridges and overhead railway supports have been built. Laying of the track itself and other facilities has not yet been done as they are part of a separate agreement.
Acting Head of the Laos-China Railway Project Management Committee under the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Mr Thenekham Thongbonh, told Vientiane Times on Friday that when all of the main structures are in place the next step will be installation of the track, electricity and management systems, and other facilities needed to operate the railway.

Last week, I found myself in a lovely village called Phiengngam. It is home to the Tai Deng and Tai Khao ethnic groups which are famed not only for their traditional handicrafts and textiles, but also for their nature-based way of life.

- Namtha is the capital of Luang Namtha province but isn’t on most travellers’ itinerary like Meuang Sing because people tend to think that, as the provincial capital, Namtha is a busy commercial hub. But in fact it is full of interest and well worth a few days of exploration.
I too used to think of Namtha as being a stopover town and never spent much time there because I’m basically a country boy and prefer to be in rural areas.
But I found that this small town of Namtha provided me with almost everything I like and it turned out that my four days there were not long enough to see everything I wanted to.
I arrived in the late afternoon and went to look for the tourist office which I found near the night market and was pleased that it had some quite useful information.
After that I really enjoyed walking around the night market and eating the local food.

- The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations will bolster Laos’ efforts to end hunger and other forms of malnutrition and work to ensure food security and healthy diets for all.
FAO Representative to Laos, Mr Nasar Hayat, yesterday delivered a message to mark World Food Day on October 16 under the slogan “Our actions are our future. Healthy diets for a #ZeroHunger world”.
The campaign calls for faster and more ambitious action across sectors to achieve Sustainable Development Goal No. 2 (SDG2) on Zero Hunger.
Mr Hayat pointed out that the number of undernourished people in the world is increasing. More than 820 million people do not have enough to eat, but at the same time overweight and obesity continue to increase in all regions, particularly among school-age children and adults.
The prevalence of undernourishment in Laos is around 17 percent, which is much higher than the regional average of 9.2 percent.

Last week I went to the Nam Ngum river in Saendin village, Naxaithong district, about 40 kilometres from Vientiane.

Every year Lao residents excitedly prepare to usher in the three-month period of Lent, which is viewed as a special and auspicious occasion.
As in previous years, Lao people and foreigners are gearing up for the festival with believers preparing to make donations of food and other offerings, and earn merit at the same time.
