- Another case of Covid-19 has been confirmed after a 25-year-old man tested positive on his return to Champassak province, after entering Laos from Thailand.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Deputy Director General of the Department of Communicable Disease Control under the Ministry of Health, Dr Phonepaseuth Xayamoungkhoun, said the man arrived in Champassak on April 8.
He was taken to a quarantine facility at Km21 in Outhomphone district, where he was tested for Covid-19 on April 13. The following day a positive test result was returned and he was admitted to the provincial hospital.
The 18 people who had accompanied the man, or had been in close contact with him, tested negative for the virus but will remain in quarantine for 14 days.
With the number of known cases in Laos now standing at 53, the National Taskforce Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control has advised people not to become complacent and to act with caution.

- Hot springs are a tourist attraction in northern Laos and some people may have heard of the springs in Xieng Khuang province, but how many know that there is another and, possibly better, hot spring in Hiem district, Huaphan province.
I’ve never been to a hot spring before because I wasn’t particularly interested in the idea, but since experiencing the wonderful natural hot water source in Hiem district my attitude has changed.
I went there recently along with other journalists as part of a programme organised by the Lao Journalists’ Association and the Wildlife Conservation Society.
We had a packed itinerary but after talking to some locals about the springs I decided I really couldn’t skip this part of the programme, especially as the outside temperature was just 13 degrees Celsius.
Local authorities say the Meuang Hot Spring is one of the hottest natural springs in Laos and at its source the water temperature is 100C.

- A Chinese railway construction company has initiated a scheme to provide on-the-job training for Lao workers so they can make a bigger contribution to the construction of the Laos-China railway.
China Railway 15 Bureau Group Co., Ltd., which has been contracted to make sleepers for the 414-km railway, revealed the on-the-job training scheme when hosting a visit by reporters on November 5.
The Chinese firm, which will make 800,000 sleepers for the entire length of the railway, is hiring 182 Lao workers.
The company is also translating work manuals, work safety guides and regulations from Chinese into Lao so they can be used by local workers. Lao workers who have already undergone training have been assigned to train newly recruited workers.
In addition to training, the company is providing accommodation and food for Lao employees so they can start work on time and complete their assignments as planned.

- Villages in many districts of Xayaboury province have been hit hard by floods following two days of widespread heavy rain across the northwest of the country.
The districts of Xayaboury, Botaen, Kaenthao Khop and Ngeun bore the brunt of the flooding with the low-lying villages of Simeuang, Nayao, Nongsaeng and Nator in Xayaboury district particularly suffering from the inundation.
Over 200 houses and more than 1,000 people were impacted in villages of Xayaboury district, according to local authorities.

- The National Taskforce Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control is eager to have the last three infected virus patients nursed back to health so they can be discharged from hospital.
The three will be released from Mittaphab Hospital in Vientiane if they twice test negative for the coronavirus. Two of five remaining Covid-19 patients at Mittaphab Hospital were allowed to return home on Wednesday.
Speaking at the daily media briefing on Monday, Deputy Minister of Health, Associate Professor Phouthone Muongpak said the country had recorded no new infections for 46 consecutive days.
He requested the public’s cooperation in complying with the government’s measures to gradually get the economy up and running again while ensuring there were no second phase outbreaks.
This included actions such as wearing face masks and social distancing pending the Prime Minister’s next announcement on the easing of restrictions expected ahead of June 1.

- The National Taskforce Committee on Prevention and Control of New Coronavirus (Covid-19) has urged businesses to continue to follow strict hygiene measures even though the government has eased restrictions concerning control of the virus.
The committee, represented by Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Mr Savankhone Razmountry, passed on the message to business operators during a media briefing held at the National Operation Centre for Covid-19 on Thursday.
The government has decided to lift some of the restrictions imposed so that businesses can reopen and help ease the impact on the economy.
The government enforced the restrictions to prevent the spread of the virus, beginning in late March.
Most service-related businesses were ordered to close and have remained closed for at least a month, as places like hotels and restaurants were deemed to be most likely to spread Covid-19.
