- The European Union (EU) will provide 900,000 euros to Laos for a project to develop nationwide health coverage through a service that everyone can afford.
The launch of the joint three year project between the Ministry of Health, EU, and the World Health Organisation (WHO) took place in Vientiane yesterday.
The project is titled ‘Improving accountability in health financing and functioning of National Health Insurance Branches in two provinces' (Vientiane and Luang Prabang), and seeks to move Laos closer to achieving universal health coverage.
Timely access to health care is critical to maintaining good health yet the high cost of health services often means that people cannot afford care even when they need it the most. The result is that they are forced to make a difficult decision between receiving essential care and facing severe financial hardship.
