- The San Diego Union-Tribune and the San Diego County Office of Education held The 53rd annual San Diego Union-Tribune Countywide Spelling Bee on March 9, 2023, at the Town & Country Resort in Mission Valley.
The Countywide Spelling Bee was open to 6th-, 7th-, and 8th-grade students in any public or private school with a combined enrollment of 30 or more children.
The winner, Mihir Konkapaka from Mesa Verde Middle, is awarded the title of local spelling bee champion and will receive an all-expense-paid trip to compete in the 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

- The San Diego Union-Tribune hosted the 52nd annual Countywide Spelling Bee virtually on Thursday, March 17, 2022. Eleven-year-old Mihir Konkapaka was named the San Diego Countywide Spelling Bee champion after a nearly seven-hour competition, and received an all-expense-paid trip to compete in the 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Jedd Li, a student at Francis Parker School, came in second. Both were among the 60 students who participated in the competition.

It featured panel sessions on timely topics with over 35 editors and reporters, a documentary screening and keynote speakers. Over 300 people gathered to hear from reporters who have uncovered corruption at City Hall, exposed deaths in county jails, and brought to light gang rape allegations involving San Diego State University.
The Festival of Journalism was presented by the Union-Tribune, SDSU’s School of Journalism & Media Studies, KPBS and Voice of San Diego. Over 25 media outlets and journalism organizations were involved in the event.
