- It has been exactly a year since San Diego has been able to see and embrace and say, “Thank you” to Tony Gwynn.
On June 16 of last year, many years too early, we lost Mr. Padre. Mr. Aztec. Mr. San Diego.
But the thing about a man whose legacy is so unmatched and unblemished, is that it is unending.
We can only imagine the Tony-shaped hole that remains in the Gwynn family. But we can definitely imagine it, because his passing left us less than we were as well.
Those of us in the media, certainly, have never had it better than the many years Gwynn entertained and informed us. Even those of us who upset him, he talked to and listened to. He was always available, always gave even more than we asked.
But we were just a conduit. He was the people’s player.
