- Description
- More than 100 days since the US and Israel launched co-ordinated strikes on Iran on February 28, the war that was supposed to eliminate its threat and reshape the region is at a crossroads.
Iran's military is still firing. Its proxies are still active. Hezbollah continues to engage Israeli forces on the ground in southern Lebanon. The Houthis have re-entered the equation, threatening to blockade the Red Sea. And the Iranian regime, in a new form, is intact.
This week, US President Donald Trump made his position clear in an interview with the Financial Times. He said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will have no choice but to accept a deal with Iran. And then, in a striking public statement, said he calls the shots. Not Netanyahu.
So is this a genuine rift between the two allies, or just the latest rough patch in a relationship that has long been complicated?
In this episode of Beyond the Headlines, host Nada AlTaher speaks to...

- Description
- It's the biggest World Cup. It is also probably the most political tournament in football history. Over the next 39 days, 104 football matches will take place across the US, Canada and Mexico. The contingent from the region is also supersized with eight Arab and North African nations among the 48 teams plotting their path to the final in New Jersey on July 19.
Build-up to the tournament has been fraught with off-field politics. Iran is at war with one of the hosts. The US has denied visas to spectators and even Fifa referees. For those who can enter the country, there are questions over the spiralling costs of attending matches.
Hosted by The National's Mina Rzouki, our panel, which includes sports editor Steve Luckings, business correspondent Kyle Fitzgerald in Washington, and football correspondent and author Andy Mitten, discussed the politics and economics around the World Cup. The panel talks about which of the eight Arab nations can go the furthest and...

- Description
- With the regime still standing, Iran's missile capabilities operational and its proxies strong enough to fire back, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert says that the war, more than 100 days in, is “back at square one”.
US President Donald Trump wants out, whether or not Israel is on board – a position he made very clear in an interview with the Financial Times this week. He said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will have “no choice” but to accept a deal struck with Iran, one that could substantially resemble the 2015 nuclear agreement.
“Largely, we are back to square one. The objectives ... have not been achieved,” Mr Olmert told The National in an interview.

- World Cup 2026: Why Fifa's pricing strategy may have backfired
- Runtime

- Date posted
- Description
- The 2026 Fifa World Cup was supposed to be a record-breaking economic windfall for the United States. But as the tournament gets under way, the numbers reveal a more complicated story.
Top-tier tickets for the final are going for more than $10,000, nearly seven times what the co-hosts' bid book originally promised. Hotel occupancy in some host cities, meanwhile, is tracking below normal summer levels. And the international tourism boom that was supposed to drive billions into local economies is being complicated by visa restrictions, geopolitical tensions and dynamic pricing that has left fans unable to afford tickets.
The contrast with Qatar 2022 is stark. When the Middle East hosted its first Fifa World Cup, football fans could attend group stage matches for a fraction of the cost, with airlines laying on extra flights and some supporters watching two games a day.

- Russia’s Minister of Economic Development has rejected western claims of a crisis in his country, pointing to solid growth and rising personal incomes as the economy becomes “more sustainable and balanced”.
In an exclusive interview with On The Record at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, Maxim Reshetnikov tells Hadley Gamble: "I don’t know what you mean by crisis. Over the last three years the growth of the Russian economy has been more than 10 per cent."
Mr Reshetnikov also reveals Russia's 2026 budget is built on Urals crude at $59 per barrel. The current market price is $87 per barrel. “When the oil price is above $59 we start to stock additional funds," he says. "When it’s under $59 we start spending them, the special reserve fund, which we call the Fund for National Welfare."
