- The UAE, the world's seventh-largest producer of oil, has announced it will withdraw from Opec after more than five decades, with the decision taking effect on May 1.
The Gulf country will also exit its terms and obligations under the broader Opec+ supergroup, which includes non-members led by Russia.
The UAE’s decision to exit from Opec reflected a "policy-driven evolution aligned with long-term market fundamentals," Suhail Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, said in a statement.

- Iranian arms supplies to Islamist-aligned factions within Sudan’s military have been continuing throughout the country’s civil war, a former Sudanese minister has said.
The relationship between Sudan’s Islamist movement and Iran dates back more than four decades, said Khalid Yousif, a former cabinet minister of Sudan’s short-lived civilian government. He added that Tehran had provided economic support and technology transfer to what he described as Sudan’s military-industrial complex established under Islamist rule.
“This military regime now led by Al Burhan re-established diplomatic ties with Iran after the war [broke out] in 2023," Mr Yousif says. “They sent a Sudanese ambassador to Tehran. They received a new Iranian ambassador, and the supply of weapons since that time is continuing, fuelling the war in Sudan.”

The country is stuck in a tug-of-war of foreign influence between Washington and Tehran, as both seek to strengthen their hold over Iraqi politics and security. Now, Iraq's politicians are carefully trying to calculate which candidate would appease both sides.
The Iran war has added another burden to Iraq, which became the only country to be attacked by Tehran-backed militias and American warplanes.
Meanwhile, the US and Iran are cranking up the pressure on Baghdad to choose a leader who serves both their interests. Last week, Quds Force commander Brig Gen Esmail Qaani visited Iraq, while the US reportedly withheld shipments of oil revenue dollars.

- Fertiglobe does not expect the current geopolitical situation to significantly affect its business, because higher fertiliser costs have enabled the company to compensate for additional logistics expenses, its chief executive has said.
The US-Israeli war on Iran has driven up transport costs for commodities, forcing producers such as Fertiglobe – the world’s largest seaborne exporter of urea and ammonia – to seek alternative routes.
“We've done some pretty abnormal movements of vessels that we've never done before, and we've had vessels now go from Algeria to Australia and Nigeria to Australia,” Ahmed El Hoshy told The National.
Urea, the most commonly used chemical for fertiliser, has risen in price from about $465 a tonne on the eve of the war to about $695 on Wednesday, according to Trading Economics. The price peaked at more than $720 on April 15.
