- Description
- Egypt's President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi weighed in on the recent debate on freedom of expression, following the comments made by French President Emmanuel Macron concerning cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad seen as blasphemous by Muslims.
Al-Sisi said that the 1.5 billion Muslims across the globe should not be held hostage by the actions of some extremists. Al-Sisi called for Islam’s reputation to be upheld alongside the spreading of tolerance, during an event to celebrate the Prophet Mohammad’s birth anniversary.
During a speech to mark the occasion, President Al-Sisi called on clerics and intellectuals to work towards spreading the Prophet Mohammad’s teachings, which will help to combat extremism. He further discussed the renewal of religious discourse, which he has done on previous occasions.

- Description
- Over the centuries, Egyptians have preserved a number of outstanding customs and traditions in celebrating "Al-Mawlid Al-Nabawi" (birth of Prophet Muhammad) every year.
In Egypt, just like any other spiritual ceremony, celebrations have a unique taste, different forms, and inherited legacies in the forms of celebrating the birthday of Islam’s messenger. Coloured lamps hang on trees, brightly lighting streets, Islamic chanting airs from radio stations, and most significantly, “Arouset El-Mouled” (the bride doll of the birth date) and “Halawet El-Mouled” (birth of Prophet Muhammad’s special sweets and sweetened nuts).
