- Dog unlocks shelter door to escape and run home
- Date posted
- Description
- After a West Virginia shelter dog named Dawson escaped from his gated enclosure and then used his teeth to open the front door on Jan. 4, a search began.
Dawson arrived at the shelter on Dec. 31 after he was picked up by animal control officers. They had received a call about an abandoned dog in a home, the shelter director said, but they ended up bringing two more — including Dawson — to the shelter. Dawson appeared to be taken care of and did not show signs of neglect.
A few days into the search for Dawson, someone commented on the shelter’s Facebook page that the dog's name is Rufus and that he is home safe.
“We’ve not had anything happen like that before,” said Courtney Proctor Cross, the shelter director. “That is one smart little dog.”

- Description
- President Donald Trump said he will meet with Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado next week — and that he would accept the award she has said she wants to share with him.
“I look forward to saying hello to her,” the president said of the Venezuelan opposition leader during an interview with Fox News’s Sean Hannity that aired on Jan. 8. Trump added that he heard Machado wants to give him the prize, “and that would be a great honor.”
Trump has openly coveted and publicly lobbied for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Two people close to the White House previously told The Post that Trump was not willing to support Machado because she accepted the Peace Prize. “If she had turned it down and said, ‘I can’t accept it because it’s Donald Trump’s,’ she’d be the president of Venezuela today,” one of the people said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive situation.

Beck says that the temporary nature of his work is part of the point. “If the drawing did not get erased, you would never be able to make more than one drawing in the same location,” he said.

- The new U.S. dietary guidelines include butter as a cooking fat in addition to olive oil. Previous guidelines encouraged shifting away from butter in favor of vegetable oils. That change has left many people confused. Decades of research suggest that butter raises LDL, or the “bad” cholesterol, compared to plant-based oils, and higher intake is linked to greater health risks over time.
What does that mean for your everyday cooking? Dr. Trisha Pasricha, a physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and The Washington Post’s Ask a Doctor columnist, explains what she tells her patients about butter and heart health.

- Two sloth bear cubs have been born at the National Zoo. The births, which occurred Dec. 7, were announced Tuesday.
The mother sloth bear, Molly, came to the zoo in April from a zoo in Kansas, in accordance with a breeding plan from a national zoo organization concerned with the survival of vulnerable species.
Zookeepers “observed breeding behaviors” in July between Molly and both of the two males, but have not yet determined which of the male bears is the father. DNA testing, at the zoo’s genomics lab, should clear it up, the zoo said.
Sloth bears are considered vulnerable, with 20,000 or fewer remaining in the wild, according to the Smithsonian. Despite their name, they are not related to sloths.
