- Not content with surrendering fishing rights and spending £570m reintroducing the Erasmus scheme, Sir Keir Starmer now wants to move Britain even closer to the EU by aligning with single-market rules on food standards and carbon emissions. Not only that, but he also wants to do so using so-called “Henry VIII powers”, secondary legislation which could be approved without a Parliamentary vote.
On today’s Daily T podcast, Camilla Tominey is joined by Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, who cannot understand why the UK would want to return to the more heavily regulated world of Brussels when the country has benefited from the flexibility of not being in the bloc.
And as European leaders celebrate the unseating of prime minister Viktor Orban in Hungary, Camilla and Sir Jacob weigh in on what the election of Péter Magyar could mean for Europe.

- Could Donald Trump’s naval blockade break Iran’s grip on the Strait of Hormuz?
As the shaky ceasefire between the US, Israel and Iran continues to hold despite failed peace talks over the weekend, Washington is trying a new tack to end the war: barring Iran’s use of its ports. With the US Navy enforcing a blockade of the Strait as of today, Venetia Rainey and Roland Oliphant are joined by senior foreign correspondent Adrian Blomfield in Oman to discuss whether it could work.
Adrian also looks at the reasons behind the failure of US-Iran peace talks in Islamabad, Pakistan over the weekend and why there are still hopes that something positive will come of it.
Plus, Venetia and Roland discuss the latest news updates from the region, including talks between Lebanon and Israel and Trump’s spat with the Pope.

The inquiry heard that Alphonse Rudakubana and Laetitia Muzayire knew their son was hoarding knives, accessing “chilling” violent content online and had been making poison in his room.
The report also found systemic failings by Prevent, the police and he NHS that allowed Rudakubana to murder Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe, and Alice da Silva Aguiar.
Joining Camilla Tominey as a co-host, Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg says that, while the parents must take responsibility, authorities and bodies are “always looking for somebody else to blame”.

Orbán describes his government as an “illiberal democracy” – positioning it against what he portrays as an overreaching, ideologically driven Brussels that promotes policies on Ukraine, immigration, and gender that he argues conflict with Hungarian values and interests.
At a press conference in Budapest earlier this year, Orbán told me that the liberal world order had come to an end and that we are now entering “the era of nations” – casting the election as a choice between national sovereignty and submission to EU institutions.

The seven-meter (23-foot) figure was packed with 14 kilograms (31 lb) of gunpowder in El Burgo, a small town near the southern city of Malaga, in a decades-old ceremony on April 5, its Mayor Maria Dolores Narvaez told local television.
"The appalling antisemitic hatred on display here is a direct result of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's government's systemic incitement," Israel's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on X which highlighted the video clip.
"The Spanish government is committed to fighting against antisemitism and any form of hate or discrimination. As such we totally reject any insidious allegation which suggests the contrary," a Spanish Foreign Ministry source said in response.

- Irish police used pepper spray in a joint operation with the armed forces to disperse protesters who had blockaded an oil refinery.
Gardai took an hour to clear the demonstrators outside County Cork’s Whitegate refinery, the source of Ireland’s entire supply of petrol and diesel.
Farmers, hauliers and taxi drivers had blocked access to the site for five days with slow-moving convoys and vehicles parked across the road.
The protest against sky-high fuel prices caused by the Iran war had seen supplies run dry across 600 of the nation’s 1,500 petrol stations, with roughly a day to go before a full shutdown, according to industry sources.
Video released on Saturday showed Gardai units escorting tankers out of Whitegate.
Police moved in to clear the protest because of a growing threat to the fuel supplies for “emergency public services, including ambulance and fire services,” the Gardai force said in a stat...

After climbing onto the wings of the plane, he used a tool to damage the fuselage.
Once source said that there had been “extensive” damage to the plane, according to The Journal.
The attack took place at 9.45am, and caused officials to flock to the airport, which was closed for half an hour and caused two flights to be delayed.
“The airport suspended operations at approximately 9.50am and resumed operations at 10.15am,” a spokesperson for the airport said.
While the motive for the attack remains unclear, it comes as protests over fuel prices have caused chaos in Ireland following the Iran war.
Fuel shortages have increased in the Middle East after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping channel for oil.

Nasa’s Artemis II mission ended in a final fiery descent, with the four astronauts splashing down in the Pacific Ocean, shortly after 1am, following a bone-juddering 13-minute ride through Earth’s atmosphere.
It was the end of a triumphant mission that captivated the world, unveiled astonishing new panoramas of our home planet and the Moon, and conferred “international treasure” status on Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen.
Unlike the Apollo missions, when updates were limited to scant news bulletins and articles, Nasa livestreamed the whole event from cameras on Orion’s solar array and inside the crew capsule.

The Deputy Prime Minister boasted that the venture in Guyana would make the country “the breadbasket of the Caribbean”, but he “ran as far as he could” when it started to fail, it was claimed.
The company has since gone under and faces allegations of unpaid bills and wrecking a Guyanese coconut farm.
A 92-year-old woman who leased land to a British banker behind the firm said Mr Lammy abandoned her when she sought his help, and ignored her when she went to his hotel for three days running, hoping to talk to him.
The saga, which has now ended up in court, could embarrass Labour as it prepares for next month’s local elections.

The Admiral Grigorovich, a Black Sea fleet frigate, accompanied a pair of shadow fleet ships on Wednesday while a British naval vessel followed behind.
Positioned on a boat about 10 miles from Dover, The Telegraph observed Putin’s flotilla cruising past the south coast while RFA Tideforce, a Royal Fleet Auxiliary tanker, trailed in their wake.

- Britain is more divided now than at the time of the Brexit referendum, a new poll for The Telegraph has revealed.
More than three quarters of voters and a majority of all social groups say they think the country is more fractured than it was a decade ago, with the country split by identity, geography and political views.
The poll of 4,900 people in England, Scotland and Wales finds that the public feels let down by national institutions, including the Westminster system, the tax system and the BBC, leading two thirds to conclude that politics is broken and cannot be fixed.

Donald Trump has announced a two-week ceasefire deal after 40 days of fighting, with peace talks mediated by Pakistan set to go ahead this Friday. Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth today said the US had achieved a “historic and overwhelming victory on the battlefield”.
But many questions remain unanswered. Will the ceasefire turn into a lasting peace? What guarantees and concessions have been offered by each side? Will the Strait of Hormuz ever be fully open again? And why is Israel still attacking Lebanon?

- Just as the Middle East appeared to be on the brink of an uncontrollable conflict, the US and Iran have announced a two-week ceasefire. The Pakistan-brokered deal will reopen the Strait of Hormuz – though with Tehran-imposed caveats – and offers “a chance at real peace”, says Pete Hegseth, the US defence secretary.
Sir Keir Starmer is now jetting off to the Gulf, apparently to boost the morale of British troops there. But, Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley ask, what is the point of his Lawrence of Arabia-style jaunt if he had nothing to do with the truce – and indeed had insisted throughout that this was “not our war”?
Gen Lord Dannatt, the former Army chief, tells The Daily T that Britain has been “embarrassed” and “humiliated” by the Iran crisis and what it has revealed about our depleted defence capabilities.

The overall cost of rural crime was £44.1m last year, with the approximate cost of tractor thefts alone rising by 17% to £1.5m, according to National Farmers Union (NFU) estimates.
The Telegraph's Abigail Buchanan joined North Yorkshire Police as they crack down on this crime epidemic.

- The migrant crisis of 2015 didn’t just reshape Europe’s borders – it reshaped how Europe sees itself.
Nowhere is that shift more visible than in Hungary: a country that became a crucial transit route for migrants from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan on their way to Germany, France, and the United Kingdom – and one that has since taken a sharply different path.
Though a member of both the European Union and Nato, Hungary has increasingly set itself apart. On immigration, national sovereignty, and the limits of Brussels’ authority, its government has adopted a far more confrontational stance than many of its European counterparts.
