- Astronomy fans across the UK were treated to an astral delight overnight as the best solar eclipse in decades was followed by the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower.
More than 90% of the Sun was obscured by the Moon, the most it has been blocked above UK skies since the total eclipse in 1999.
Crowds of people could be seen at viewing spots in different locations – including the Royal Observatory Greenwich, London, Stonehenge in Wiltshire, Calton Hill, Edinburgh, and outside Queen’s University in Belfast.
Speaking with The Telegraph's Poppy Coburn, Talk's Ian Collins says: "I wanted what Bonnie Tyler sung in that song. That's what I was hoping for. And what I got was overcast!"

Robert also warned that the arrival of increasingly large dinghies showed why a strategy focused primarily on disrupting smuggling gangs would fail, as criminal networks could continually adapt their methods.

The Centre for Government Reform calculated average attendance across the Civil Service at approximately 39 per cent — well below the Government’s 60 per cent minimum.
Its chief executive, Ameer Kotecha, argued that previously published figures measured the proportion of available desks being used rather than the proportion of the total workforce attending. Some offices have far fewer desks than employees, potentially creating a misleading picture of attendance.
Ameer, who spent ten years working in the Foreign Office, warned that excessive homeworking was damaging Whitehall productivity and slowing down decisions.
He said: “Everything happens far more slowly when people are not in the office. It’s like wading through sludge.”

Ministers from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), Home Office, and Department for Health will attend. The Environment Agency will also be present.

- Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is facing renewed accusations of sexism after making a suggestive gesture while discussing a gift of two Japanese crown melons.
During a podcast appearance, the conversation took a crude turn when the host made a Pamela Anderson joke and Albanese appeared to gesture towards a woman’s breasts.
News Corp Australia’s Europe correspondent Sophie Elsworth described the incident as “very embarrassing” and said the Prime Minister should admit that he had “stuffed up”.
She said: “He’s very big on championing women. He’s always banging on about women’s rights and treating them respectfully. Just say sorry.”

- 'Kim Jong-un Couldn’t Have Come Up With That!’ | Police Tell ITV Presenter To Take ‘THINKING’ Course
- Runtime

- Description
- Wildlife presenter and animal-rights campaigner Anneka Svenska says two police officers arrived at her home after MBR Acres complained about an Instagram video questioning the disposal of dead beagles bred for laboratory testing.
Svenska says police accused her of publishing false information and suggested that she complete an online “thinking skills” course. She compares it to brainwashing, accuses police of targeting the wrong people and warns that free speech is being suppressed.
After consulting the Free Speech Union and a lawyer, Svenska refused to accept the proposed Community Resolution and supplied documents supporting her video. She says police closed the case within 15 minutes.
Ian Collins questions why officers became involved in a dispute between a campaigner and a company, before joking that even Kim Jong-un could not have devised the name “thinking skills course”.

- Specialist glasses have sold out at major retailers as Britons prepare for the best solar eclipse in decades.
More than 90% of the sun will be obscured by the moon between 6.17pm and 8.06pm on Wednesday, the most it has been blocked above UK skies since the total eclipse in 1999.
Convenience stores, national parks and the Royal Greenwich Observatory have all exhausted their glasses supplies ahead of the eclipse, which will be the country’s fullest for the next 54 years.
Speaking with Former Conservative Special Advisor Charlie Rowley, Talk's Ian Collins says: "I have never got fired up about an eclipse!"

- Andy Burnham has said he “wouldn’t forgive myself” if he did not try to lessen the “anguish” of Pc Andrew Harper’s family, as the Prime Minister seeks to prevent the early release of the police officer’s killers.
Mr Burnham has ordered Justice Secretary Alex Norris to draw up plans to free up prison space for serious offenders, and said he is “increasingly confident” Pc Harper’s killers will not be released early from their sentences as a result.
Speaking to LBC, the Prime Minister was asked if he had a message for Aimee Harper, the sister of the police officer who died in the line of duty in 2019, and who had shared with the broadcaster her experience of sitting in the courtroom with his killers.
Speaking with Former probation officer James Riley, Talk's Ian Collins says: "The last government did pretty much nothing to address this. They could see it coming around the corner."
