Title: Controversial modernism in the Alps
Runtime: 4:01
Date posted: 10 years ago
Description: A look back at how two brothers introduced American-styled architecture to a remote Swiss village in the 1950s. (SRF, swissinfo.ch)

The Guscetti brothers, one an engineer and one an architect, built houses inspired by American modernism in the southern Swiss canton of Ticino. Houses in the village of Ambri built by the duo contrasted starkly with the traditional sloped roof stone houses common to the area.

Their designs were such a sensation that German toy manufacturer Faller went on to produce hundreds of thousands of model houses, the “Villa in Ticino”, inspired by the Guscetti brothers’ buildings.

“The Dream of America”, an exhibition in Stans has traced the influence of American modernism in Switzerland to Bürgenstock and the Ambri area.

Description: A law effectively putting an end to Swiss banking secrecy has come into force. This report shows how bank data will be exchanged between countries. (SRF/swissinfo.ch)

From the beginning of January, a new international law that introduced the automatic exchange of bank data means foreign citizens with accounts in Switzerland can expect previously secret information to be shared with their home tax authorities, and vice versa. It’s a deal that’s been agreed in principle with around 100 countries, although the United States is notably missing.

However, it was under pressure from the US that the first cracks in Swiss banking secrecy appeared. Since 2009, Swiss banks have paid billions in fines for enabling Americans to evade taxes.

The US Justice authorities started clamping down on American tax evaders hiding cash in Swiss accounts almost a decade ago.

The recent change has attracted attention internationally. On platforms such as ...

Description: What happens when a group of cocoa farmers from Peru launch their own chocolate label but have never made chocolate before? They fly to Switzerland. (SRF, swissinfo.ch)
Choba Choba, meaning “I help you, you help me” in the Andean language Quechua, is a Swiss co-founded initiative aimed at empowering cocoa farmers in Peru by turning them into entrepreneurs.
The company, based in Bern, was co-founded in October 2015 by the Swiss, Christoph Inauen, and Eric Garnier from France, along with 36 organic cacao farmers from the communities Pucallpillo and Santa Rosa in Peru’s Alto Huayabamba Valley.
At the end of November, Inauen accompanied three of the farmers to the Swiss chocolate factory, Felchin, that produces the chocolate from their cocoa, and Swiss-sourced milk.
The trip to Switzerland is part of the training the farmers are receiving to help them make better business decisions now that they are shareholders in the company.

New lease of life for historic radio transmitter

Description: Many older Swiss still remember the Beromünster national transmitter from the golden days of radio. Those days are gone, but the iconic structure is experiencing a new lease of life. (SRF/swissinfo.ch)

Of the two transmitters above Beromünster in canton Lucerne, only one remains today and is under cultural heritage protection. The 220 metre steel tower was built 80 years ago with a 60 kW AM transmitter, replacing local radio stations at Zurich, Basel and Bern. Radio signals stopped emitting from it eight years ago.

Now the Federal Office for the Environment uses it to monitor harmful substances in the air, such as fine dust, ozone and nitrogen dioxide. The Beromünster is the newest of 16 air-monitoring stations run by the office.

However, the name Beromünster still reminds many Swiss of the heyday of radio. It was the main source of information and entertain in the 1930s and 1940s for Switzerland’s German speaking population. During the Sec...

Description: In November 1946 an American military airplane made an emergency landing on the Gauli glacier in the Bernese Alps. All 12 people on board were rescued in a spectacular mission that marked the birth of the Swiss air rescue service REGA. (SRF/swissinfo.ch)

On its way from Munich to Marseille a Douglas DC-3 Dakota US military plane crash-landed on a glacier above Meiringen. The US military plane wasn’t allowed to enter neutral Swiss air space. This is why no one expected the Dakota to get stranded in the Bernese Alps. In their final radio message the crew said they could only survive for another 24 hours. The message got picked up at the Meiringen air base – a sign that the plane must have crashed close by.

Title: New lease of life for historic radio transmitter
Runtime: 1:17
Date posted: 10 years ago
Description: Before television, Swiss cinemas showed weekly news reels. The “Schweizer Filmwochenschau” was commissioned by the cabinet in 1940 to counter Nazi propaganda. (SRF/Schweizer Filmwochenschau/swissinfo.ch)

From wolf hunts to military parades and gymnastic events: For 35 years weekly news reels provided the Swiss with moving images of their country and the world. Besides radio and newspapers, the Filmwochenschau was the only source of news.

Leading Swiss filmmakers of the day produced reports for the reels. Each episode was made in three languages. Production came to an end in 1975, when TV news became ubiquitous.

Around 6,500 archived film reels are now being digitalised in order to be made available online. The project is a joint venture between the National Film Archives, the Swiss Federal Archives and Memoriav.

Record-breaking solar plane back in Switzerland

The plane covered more than 40,000 km (24,800 miles) in 16 months, becoming the first solar-powered aircraft to fly around the planet without the use of fuel.

Solar Impulse 2 left Abu Dhabi on March 9, 2015 and returned on July 26, 2016, completing the record-breaking circumnavigation of the earth after 550 hours in the air.

Along the way, the solar aircraft stopped off in 17 destinations. Poor weather conditions and technical problems with the batteries grounded the plane in Hawaii from July 2015 to April 2016.
On Tuesday, Solar Impulse 2 landed back at the military airport in Dübendorf, canton Zurich after being transported from Abu Dhabi in a 747 cargo aircraft.

The project had an overall budget of CHF170 million ($177 million). Solar Impulse’s many partners included the Swiss government, wh...
