However, building new, incongruous structures in historic town centres can often change the local character. (SRF/swissinfo.ch)

The Geneva archives are testament to efforts to establish peace through diplomacy. The League of Nations was the predecessor of the United Nations, and was the first international organisation that set out to achieve world peace. The 26 years of the League's history are summed up in 15 million pages.

- Description
- A Swiss team is trying to save Palaeolithic cave paintings in the Lascaux caves in the Dordogne, France, which are under threat from condensation. (RTS/swissinfo.ch)
Estimated to be up to 20,000 years old, the paintings consist primarily of large animals, once native to the region. They were discovered in 1940, and given statutory historic monument protection. In 1979, Lascaux and other decorated caves of the Vézère Valley were added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list.
The Swiss Institute of Speleology, a team of specialists from canton Neuchâtel, is trying to come up with ways of preventing further degradation of these historically important cave pictures by studying comparable sites. The team hopes to propose a plan to limit the damage in about a year. Otherwise, some of the paintings could be lost forever.

This is defined as the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge and skills recognised as part of a country's cultural heritage. It is sometimes called living cultural heritage.
Basel Fasnacht is the biggest carnival in Switzerland, featuring "Morgenstreich", a surreal parade. Each clique travels with an illuminated lantern, decorated around the subject of political satire.

- The Swiss Post may soon be using drones to deliver Christmas packages in isolated areas, but 60 years ago, postmen used a good old analogue method: skis.
Modern postmen have more to fear from aggressive dogs than sporting injuries. But last century, postmen in mountain areas of Switzerland risked breaking their necks to get the Christmas packages to their destinations on time.
In this footage from the archives of Swiss Public Television, RTS, you can see how the post office in Einsiedeln came to terms with heavy snow fall affecting the village of Oberiberg (canton Schwyz) at Christmas in 1957. The postal bus was driven as far as possible, but then the postman had to strap on his skis in order to get through the heavy snow. The village is located at 1125 metres above sea level and receives quite a lot of the white stuff in winter.
This is traditionally an agricultural area but many people now commute to Einsiedeln or Zurich for work. Tourism is...

The justice and finance ministries, along with three cantonal government conferences, set out to define a more concrete plan and budget for such integration while determining how to better utilise the professional potential of refugees.

The production of artificial snow uses a lot of natural resources and energy. Some ski resorts have been using a different technique to try and make artificial snow production more efficient in terms of both natural resources, and money.
Gstaad, for example, is now using a snow depth measuring system. Every time a snow groomer (the truck that prepares the pistes) drives over the snowy surface, the depth of snow is measured, and the data sent back to a database.
Drivers can see the information on the spread of snow on screens inside their cabins, and can react, based on how deep the snow should be. They then focus artificial snow production on specific ar...
