- Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents will soon have a new, high-tech device capable of sending a painful electric shock to a person simply by touching them.
The device, called the Generated Low Output Voltage Emitter (G.L.O.V.E.), is a glove fitted with electronics and a switch that allows officers to quickly stun a person during an arrest or other interaction. The Department of Homeland Security announced on Monday that it would pay up to $20 million to outfit all its agents with the new tech.
The Kentucky-based company that manufactures the G.L.O.V.E., Compliant Technologies, frames its device as a tool that can help law enforcement better de-escalate situations. Several law enforcement and correctional agencies have already deployed the device and, in one instance, lawyers in Kentucky have said the device has led to a man’s death.

As of Aug. 14, testimony has paused for the weekend after the 13th day of the trial. Court is scheduled to resume Monday, Aug. 17, with the prosecution continuing to present its case.

“On the morning of Dec. 4, 2024, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan, and he died,” Mangione told the court. Thompson’s widow was in the courtroom and repeatedly wiped tears from her eyes, The Associated Press reported.
Mangione said his experience with the healthcare system motivated him to kill Thompson. He said he suffered “years of enduring severe pain from a broken back and navigating the obstacles of the health insurance system.” Why he chose specifically to kill Thompson, 50, remains a mystery; Mangione was never a customer of UnitedHealthcare, the company has said.
