- October is recognised around the world as Cyber Security Awareness month, and aims to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity, ensuring that everyone stays safe and secure, especially when using the internet.
Social Media platforms are one such place on the internet where everyone should exercise safe cyber security practices. Cyber criminals use social media to steal your personal information or run elaborate scams to con you out of your money. To do this they sometimes create fake social media accounts or profiles. They use these profiles in their attempt to connect with you and access your information, sometimes even posing as one of your family members or a close friend.
In this video we explore 4 ways as to how you can spot fake social media accounts.

- St Helena Government launched their Cyber Security Awareness in February 2023 with the aim of raising awareness in Government staff and citizens working within the critical national infrastructure and critical information infrastructure, children of school age and the general public, about the need for cyber security and the consequences of poor cyber hygiene. Additionally the campaign aims to raise awareness of the most common cyber security threats and disseminate the essential knowledge and training to safeguard themselves and their organisations against these threats.
Phishing is one of the most common cyber security attacks that most people will encounter in their day to day use of internet, specifically when using an email account. Phishing is the term used when cybercriminals use fake emails, posing as a personal contact, legitimate company, charity or public institution, to trick you into giving away your personal information.

- The St Helena National Trust recently completed digitisation of the East India Company records that are currently housed at the St Helena Government Archives.
The project was funded by a grant from the Endangered Archives Project of the British Library and Arcadia.
The Endangered Archives Project, since its inception in 2004 conserves endangered cultural heritage, ensuring that precious historical insights are not lost to time but are instead made available to the broadest audiences possible.
The project's focus on the digitisation of over 350 volumes of East India Company records, spanning from 1673 to 1834, is a testament to the rich history encapsulated within these documents.
The St Helena National Trust along with project partners facilitated long-term preservation of St Helena’s documents enhancing their accessibility to researchers, historians, and the general public worldwide.

Jamestown is the capital of St Helena, an island in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean.
Jamestown is the main historic settlement on the island and was once the island’s only port and was mainly used as a refreshment station for British ships travelling to the East.
It was founded when colonists from the English East India Company settled on the island in 1659 and was briefly occupied by the Dutch East India Company before being recaptured by the British. Many of the buildings built by the East India Company in the 18th century survived and as a result the island is known for its Georgian architecture.

- A Service of Thanksgiving was held at the seafront on Friday 3, June 2022, to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen.
The Thanksgiving Service ended with the presentation of commemorative Jubilee medals, awarded to personnel who work in the emergency front line service.
The day was followed by fete celebrations, which included novelty sports, an African dance display, hat and crown parade, cutting and sharing of the Jubilee Cake which was kindly sponsored by Solomon’s Bakery, quiz & bingo, live music and a firework display.

- On Saturday, 14 October 2017, an exciting new chapter began in St Helena’s history when the first ever commercial flight from South Africa touched down at St Helena Airport at 1.59pm.
Using their Embraer E190-100IGW aircraft, Airlink brought in this inaugural flight from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, following a six hour journey incorporating a fuelling stop in Windhoek, Namibia. Airlink will now operate a weekly service between St Helena and Johannesburg and St Helena and Cape Town (via the stopover at Windhoek International Airport).
72 passengers comprising returning Saints and invited guests – Tour Operators from Eastcape Tours, Get Africa Travel, Springbok Atlas and Island Holidays, International media – BBC, ITV, The Times, Thomson Reuters, Associated Press and other publications – were greeted by HE Governor Lisa Phillips on arrival and then by a full St Helenian welcome in the packed Arrivals Hall.

- The Airlink Embraer E190-100IGW aircraft landed successfully at St Helena Airport at around 11.34am on Monday, 21 August 2017.
The aircraft landed on Runway 20 at St Helena Airport after a six hour journey from Johannesburg, South Africa, incorporating a fuelling stop in Windhoek, Namibia.
The proving flight was for Airlink to demonstrate to the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) operational proficiency in terms of ETOPS (Extended Range Twin Engine Operations) requirements. This is a routine exercise for new air services, and part of the preparations for introducing an air service on a new route.
Airlink carried out a total of 13 flight trials at St Helena Airport. These included ‘touch and go’ – where the aircraft circles the runway, comes in to land, touches the wheels to the runway, and immediately takes off again for another circuit.

- The MV Greta, charted by Basil Read, arrived on St Helena late on Friday 1 July 2016, to transport materials and equipment to and from the Island for the St Helena Airport Project. Also onboard the vessel were several containers of foodstuff for St Helena which were offloaded directly onto barges and transported to Jamestown Wharf.
The MV Greta made her approach to Rupert's Wharf early on Sunday morning and berthed successfully at around 8am.
This was the very first time a vessel has docked at the permanent wharf in Rupert's and marks an important milestone for the Airport Project and for St Helena.

- On Saturday 19 March 2016, an historic event took place in the grounds of Plantation House, St Helena Island. Jonathan the Giant Tortoise - the oldest known living land animal on Earth and creakingly old national treasure at an estimated age of 184 years - was washed for the first time in recorded history by vet Dr Joe Hollins. Joe explained that the reason for bathing Jonathan came after he cleaned - and transformed - the shell of one of the female tortoises at Plantation House. Joe consulted a tortoise specialist to establish the method of cleaning, which includes gentle, circular scrubbing using non-abrasive materials.
