- **Update** Overnight, after we recorded this episode, American president Donald Trump announced a stunning reversal of his so-called “reciprocal tariffs” on social media, writing that he has paused the tariffs for the next 90 days. Trump later told reporters, “We don’t want to hurt countries that don’t need to be hurt.”
Under the pause, he’s reducing tariffs on dozens of American trading partners to a baseline 10 per cent. Australia’s 10 per cent tariff remains. Meanwhile, there is one
Glaring exception- he’s increased the tariff on China, from 104 per cent to 125 per cent after Beijing retaliated with reciprocal tariffs of its own. US share markets, which had lost trillions in value since Trump unveiled his tariffs last Thursday, skyrocketed within moments of the backflip.
