The artwork, depicting two Japanese American children in World War II incarceration camps, became the center of controversy after the college removed references to businessman Miller Freeman and his role in anti-Japanese activism. The fallout contributed to the resignations of Bellevue College president Jerry Weber and vice president Gayle Colston Barge. As the mural is rededicated six years later, Shigaki reflects on historical memory, institutional accountability, and renewed controversy sparked by a racist voicemail directed at the project.
