- To his family, Winfield J. Thompson was a humble, kind, and hardworking man who loved playing cards and spending Sundays "down home." But behind his quiet demeanor was a history of sacrifice they knew almost nothing about.
Enlisting in 1941, Sgt. Thompson served in the Philippines and survived the Bataan Death March. He rarely spoke of his time in uniform, choosing to protect his loved ones from the horrors he experienced. Decades after his passing, his family fought to ensure his sacrifice was fully recognized.
