Thousands of demonstrators have rallied in support of the Iranian government and the nation’s military. Some attending the April 13, 2026, rally in Tehran dismissed US President Donald Trump’s threats, including his announcement of a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The US military had started preventing ships from leaving Iranian ports earlier in the day. After recent US-Iran peace talks broke down in Islamabad, Tehran threatened to retaliate against ports operated by its Gulf neighbours.

US President Donald Trump attacked Pope Leo on social media on April 12, 2026, saying the first American pope should “stop catering to the radical left”. Trump’s remarks made on camera and through his Truth Social platform were an extraordinary broadside against the global leader of the Catholic Church, exacerbating a feud that began over the war in Iran.

US President Donald Trump has announced a sweeping naval operation targeting the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit chokepoints. Trump announced the move in a social media post on April 12, 2026. It was followed by an announcement later in the day by the US Central Command saying that American forces will begin “impartially” implementing the blockade against “all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports” starting on April 13 at 10pm Hong Kong time (10am US Eastern Time). The move risks deepening a global crisis and further complicating US ties with Beijing in the countdown to Trump’s expected summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in May.

Viktor Orban’s 16-year grip on Hungary is over. The Hungarian prime minister conceded defeat in the April 12, 2026, election with a phone call to Peter Magyar, the leader of the main opposition Tisza Party. The result is a resounding rebuke to a government marked by authoritarianism and corruption, as well as ties that have been closer to Beijing, Moscow and Donald Trump’s Washington rather than Brussels. Hungarians turned out in record numbers, with 77.8 per cent casting ballots as of 6.30pm – 30 minutes before polls closed – according to the national election office. The turnout was 10 points higher than the last polls in 2022 and the highest since the fall of communism.

While the world remains divided over the unresolved issue of toll collection in the Strait of Hormuz, some Chinese experts have proposed pegging fees to oil prices or using exportable digital tokens from China for settlements. However, other observers also warned that a toll system would likely function as just a temporary and differentiated wartime mechanism, rather than a long-term, jointly managed regime envisaged by US President Donald Trump.

Okinawa is Japan’s southernmost prefecture, but it had been ruled by the islands’ own Ryukyu Kingdom for more than four centuries. After incorporating influences from Japan, China and later the US, Okinawa now offers a unique culture blend of food that is quite different from the rest of the country. In this episode of Eat Drink Asia, SCMP reporter Lisa Cam explores what Okinawans eat on a daily basis, delves into the history of the Ryukyu kingdom’s court cuisine and meets a modern chef who is proudly reimagining Okinawa’s rich food culture.

Two Shenzhen shopping centres have installed hi-tech glass that becomes transparent when it detects smoke on the men’s toilet cubicle doors. The system was introduced in jewellery malls Shuibei International Centre and Gold Plaza in August 2025, in an effort to prevent people from hiding in restrooms to smoke. It has received positive feedback from shop owners and shoppers alike, according to a member of staff at Gold Plaza.

Facing increasing competition from mainland China, Hong Kong restaurants are moving away from traditional Chinese dining in a bid to stay competitive. Maxim’s restaurant group reported a 7-8 per cent drop in foot traffic since the border between the city and mainland reopened after the pandemic and a growing number of Hongkongers started heading north for dining options. Maxim’s said the trend has severely impacted its Chinese restaurants, pushing the company and others like it to scramble for ways to innovate.

- Description
- French President Emmanuel Macron has said a proposed military operation to liberate the Strait of Hormuz would be “unrealistic”. Speaking during a visit to South Korea on April 2, 2026, Macron also lamented US President Donald Trump’s inconsistent daily statements on the Iran war and Nato. Macron said such an operation to take control of the strait would take too much time and be vulnerable to “coastal threats”, particularly from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. Macron also expressed frustration at Trump’s statements on the conflict, saying the Iran war will not resolve concerns about Iran’s nuclear programme. He added that Trump’s recent remarks poking fun at the French leader’s marriage and accent do not merit a response, saying they were “neither elegant nor up to standard”.

With the successful launch of Nasa’s Artemis II mission on April 1, 2026, humans are returning to lunar orbit for the first time in over 50 years.
But while the US celebrates the start of its crewed fly-by mission, its path to the moon’s surface has hit a significant setback. Nasa’s first crewed moon landing has officially been pushed back to 2028 due to lander development hurdles, making the gap with China’s 2030 goal smaller than ever.
As Beijing continues its state-driven march towards the lunar surface, the race for the moon’s south pole is no longer a guaranteed US victory.
SCMP science reporter Ling Xin breaks down the shifting timelines and explains what the race to put people back on the moon is really about.
