Myanmar’s government has freed former president Win Myint and reduced the sentence of imprisoned former leader Aung San Suu Kyi as part of an amnesty that included the release of 4,335 prisoners, according to state media. Win Myint, an ally of Suu Kyi, served as president from 2018 to 2021 but was ousted by a military coup and had been detained since. Suu Kyi’s 27-year sentence has been cut by one-sixth, but it remained unclear whether the Nobel Peace Prize winner would be allowed to serve the rest of her sentence under house arrest, her lawyer said.

Japan’s public has once again signalled strong support for a woman ascending to the Chrysanthemum Throne, even as Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, the country’s first female leader, is pushing in a different direction. A Mainichi newspaper poll published on April 14, 2026, found that 61 per cent of respondents believed the law should be changed to allow a woman to become emperor. Only 9 per cent said the throne should remain reserved for a man. But Takaichi has signalled that she wants to shore up the existing imperial system by expanding its pool of male heirs.

Around 200 Rohingya refugees are feared dead after they went missing when a boat capsized in the Andaman Sea on its way to Malaysia. Several survivors say they floated for two days before being rescued by a passing ship. The refugee vessel left the southern Bangladeshi port of Teknaf on April 4, 2026, before it sank. UN authorities said heavy winds, rough seas and overcrowding may have played a role in the disaster.

Firefighters battled a blaze at one of Australia’s two operating oil refineries for hours after it was reported late on April 15, 2026. Flames shot as high as 60 metres (200ft) above Viva Energy's motor petrol production unit at its Geelong refinery in Victoria state. No injuries were reported from the fire at the refinery, which processes crude into high-octane petrol. Authorities said the blaze could hit petrol production more than diesel and aviation fuel.

US President Donald Trump posted an apparently AI-generated image of Jesus Christ embracing him on April 16, 2026. The post came two days after Trump deleted an earlier one that was criticised because it apparently showed the Republican president comparing himself to Jesus. The new post on Trump’s social media account shows the president, with his eyes closed, touching temple-to-temple with a similarly posed Jesus.

The war in the Middle East has raised the price of “red oil”, the tax-free industrial diesel used by Hong Kong’s maritime sector, from HK$1,000 (US$128) to over HK$2,000 per 200-litre (53-gallon) drum. It has forced nearly all of Hong Kong’s fishing fleet to dock earlier than usual for an annual fishing moratorium, hurting the livelihoods of thousands of fishermen and impacting the supply of fresh seafood for the city’s residents.
