DnD (a.k.a. Dungeons and Dragons) is a game famous for having its players roll a bunch of differently shaped dice, from the classic d20 to the atypical d3. To people used to rolling a bunch of 6-sided cubes, this might seem a little weird. But thanks to one new computer model, there's a way to make them look even weirder, and still be fair!

- In 2002, a research team discovered one of the oldest human ancestors ever, called Sahelanthropus. For over twenty years, most people thought that all they found was a skull. But a few researchers, sworn to secrecy by their peers and the norms of the field, knew that there were more. Here's the story of academic subterfuge, investigative reporting, and some full-on norm-shattering that ended up showing the world the femur of Toumaï.

You might take it for granted, but the human ability to walk on two legs is pretty special. It's been argued that basically everything we can do today stems back to the time our ancestors decided to start walking upright, so researchers want to know everything we can about it. And here's the story of how one tiny fossil toe from a hominin called Ardipithecus ramidus upended decades of research into bipedalism.

- When particle physicist John Huth was briefly lost at sea, he started to wonder how the people around the world who navigate vast oceans figured their way around. What started as an afternoon activity gone awry led him to a years-long research journey, meeting many Pacific Islanders, expert navigators, and other researchers, hoping to crack the puzzle of open ocean navigation. And the key to all of it lies in these ancient stick charts, a non-writing form of communication passed down for generations. Here's how these charts and the observations of expert navigators are teaching physics researchers all about the motion of the ocean.

While the word "mummy" may conjure up an image of King Tut (or a 1999 Brendan Fraser action/adventure movie), ancient Egyptians were far from the only culture that mummified their dead. Around the world, and across millennia, people used different techniques that could preserve a body; and sometimes, it wasn't even intentional.
UPDATE: On September 15, 2025, a paper published in the journal PNAS announced the discovery of the new oldest intentional mummies ever found, located in Southeastern Asia. You can read the paper here: https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2515103122

Astronomers have spent the past century (roughly) trying to figure out where all the elements on the Periodic Table come from. For example, the oldest hydrogen emerged when the universe was just a baby (Big Bang nucleosynthesis). And the carbon inside every living thing on Earth was made inside the bellies of stars (stellar nucleosynthesis). But the origin story for several heavy elements, including gold and platinum, has been more elusive. Enter, the r-process, and the extreme astrophysical phenomena where it can actually happen.

Humans love to decorate, and that's been true for a long time. Early humans have been painting on the walls for tens of thousand of years, and their work helped us understand a lot about their world and our own. From Lascaux Cave in France to Sulawesi, Indonesia, and from Kakadu Park in Australia to Brakfontein Cave in South Africa, these are just some of the most iconic pieces of cave art and what they teach us about ourselves.

07:11 We made a conversion error! The asteroid in this sentence should be 95,000 meters or 95 km. The conclusion (water would be deadly hot and sterilized) is correct.
Let's face it: The Earth is going to get hit by an asteroid someday. But how bad that'll be depends entirely how big it is. So how big would that space rock have to be to wipe us all out? Let's break it down, from the likeliest culprits to the hypothetical super-asteroids, and what we can do to hopefully not die.
