- UNICEF says conflict in Lebanon taking a devastating toll on children
- Date posted
- Description
- Israeli attacks in Lebanon have had a devastating and inhumane toll on children, according to UNICEF spokesperson James Elder, who has been working at hospitals in the south of the country.
Speaking to SBS News, Elder said "the trauma that the children are going through has long-term impacts" that can only start to be addressed with a ceasefire.
"They've seen so much death and destruction."
UNICEF reports that at least 600 children have been either killed or injured in Lebanon since the beginning of March.
Israel has continued strikes across Lebanon despite an ongoing ceasefire and seized a belt of territory at the border where its troops remain, saying it aims to create a "buffer zone" to shield northern Israel from attacks by Hezbollah, which fired hundreds of rockets at Israel during the conflict.

- Concerns are growing after Health Minister Mark Butler's announcement of changes to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), including reductions to financial support and standardised assessments for everyone on the scheme.
In an address to the National Press Club on Wednesday, Butler said a "diagnosis gateway" had "funnelled people onto the scheme that was never designed for them".
But disability advocates are feeling hesitant about the planned restructure of the scheme, as President of People with Disability Australia Jeramy Hope said “there’s a lot of unknown at the moment.”
Emma Bennison, Disability Advocacy Network Australia CEO, has called for a robust tool to ensure functional assessments don't leave parts of the community behind.
"It's naive to suggest anything other than that ... this is going to disproportionately impact people with psychosocial disability and people with autism," she said.

- Cocaine contamination changes how fish behave in the wild: new research
- Date posted
- Description
- A new study has explored the impacts of cocaine pollution on wild Atlantic salmon, revealing how their behaviour can change when exposed to concentrations commonly found in wastewater.
The international study, involving researchers from Griffith University, found juvenile fish exposed to the primary metabolite of cocaine swam almost twice as far and dispersed more widely than unexposed fish.
The report's co-author Marcus Michelangeli has said the findings are important because these behavioural changes impact how fish populations interact with their environment.
“Where fish go determines what they eat, what eats them, and how populations are structured,” he said.
“If pollution is changing these patterns, it has the potential to affect ecosystems in ways we are only beginning to understand.”
Cocaine and its metabolites are increasingly being detected in waterways around the world, entering through wastewater system...

- Lifeblood's donation rules are about more than just giving blood
- Date posted

- For the first time in more than 40 years, gay and bisexual men as well as transgender people who have had a single sexual partner for more than six months are able to donate whole blood.
Lifeblood's pre-donation assessments will now use gender-neutral language, meaning everyone — regardless of gender or sexual orientation — will be asked the same questions relating to sexual partners.
The change is estimated to bring in around 20,000 extra blood donations every year, and has prompted many newly eligible members of the LGBTQI+ community to roll up their sleeves.
Among them is former AFL player Mitch Brown.
He says the shift to gender-neutral language can create a safer and more inclusive environment for members of the LGBTQI+ community.
"They're simple things, but they do mean a lot," he says. "They can be the difference between whether someone like me donates or not."

As the cost of fuel continues to rise, lovers of the scooter (Vespa means wasp in Italian) say it's as relevant as ever.
"Back in the sixties, there was a petrol crisis, and it encouraged a lot of people to purchase a Vespa," Vespa Club Australia president Julie Pond told SBS News.
She says that, because of the current political and economic climate, people "are actually doing the same thing" today.
"Vespa is the ultimate choice of transport at the moment," she said.

The US president also accused Iran of getting "a little cute" with its recent moves, saying "they have no navy, they have no air force, they have no leaders, they have no nothing ... but we're talking to them".
