- Date posted

- Description
- CBS 8 has learned a class-action lawsuit is in the works against State Farm Insurance for denying water-leak damage claims.
Water damage claims are being denied at an alarming rate by State Farm, according to David Melzer, a public adjuster who advocates for homeowners. “In 2019 they came out with a policy that’s really ambiguous,” said Melzer.
State Farm's updated homeowner's policy language says "losses not insured" include "leakage of water... that occurs or develops over a period of time... and is continuous."

- Date posted

- Description
- It could be a long summer, leaving many kids hungry around San Diego County. When they are out of school, they don't have access to meals at school. For some, that can mean no meals at all.
A new federal program aims to help students' families during the summer months. It’s called SUN Bucks and it will put $120 in the pockets of families with students who qualify.
“Prices are crazy and everything has gone up and jobs are kind of like low right now and the paychecks are low, so this is a big help,” said Vrenda Tellez, a mother of twins in 3rd grade at Hawking Charter Elementary School. “Especially with them, they don’t know the word ‘no,’ so they need to have food available, and this is a big, big help for us.”

The best way to save a snake is to learn how to handle the real thing.
"I truly feel they are the underdog in nature," said Bruce Ireland. For years, Bruce has been on a one-man crusade saving snakes.
"You don't have to kill them. You may not know that much about snakes because you may not understand them and yes some of them are dangerous, but that doesn't mean we should go out and indiscriminately kill them," said Bruce.

Shuttle Challenger lands at Edwards Air Force Base. It was the seventeenth space shuttle mission but that didn’t diminish the excitement of the crowd gathered there. La Jolla High School teacher Gloria McMillan and her students were there. She was a finalist for the teacher in space program. Christa McAuliffe was chosen for the ill-fated flight.
Reporter Lorraine Kimel:
When I worked at CBS News 8 , I probably reported on more than three thousand stories. For sure, one of the most thrilling, was the assignment to go up to Edward’s Air Force base in the Mojave Desert to cover the Space Shuttle Challenger returning from outer space. It was probably the most astounding sight I have seen! Photographer Steve Renne was behind the camera capturing the action.
Sadly, within - months, on January 28, 1986, Challenger exploded, shocking and saddening people here in the USA and around the world.

The man inside the tank was 35-year-old Army veteran Shawn Nelson.
The rampage started when Nelson drove his Chevy van to the California National Guard armory in the Kearny Mesa neighborhood. The armory usually closed at 5 p.m., and the gates would be locked. But on that evening, the employees at the vehicle yards were working late.
After Nelson was inside the M-60 Patton Tank, Nelson barreled through streets in Kearny Mesa, smashed into cars and knocked down light poles, leaving thousands of people without power.

Mark Matthews has lived in his Chula Vista home for 25 years. And, he says, he’s been a customer of State Farm for more than 30 years, without ever filing a claim.
Matthews said a hot water pipe above his kitchen started leaking on April 21, and caused what he estimated to be $20,000 in damage, flooding out his dining room. “One little pipe that was just drip, drip, drip, drip, drip,” said Matthews.
