- Opening Day at Petco Park | Mostly sunny, chilly in the shade
- Date posted
- Description
- Expect a mild and comfortable Opening Day for the San Diego Padres as a weak ridge of high pressure keeps skies dry. Passing, broken clouds will be common through the day as temperatures peak in the low to mid 60s on Thursday. A light breeze will pick up in the afternoon with speeds between 10 and 15 mph. A light jacket may come in handy, as some will still feel a chill in the air, especially when not in the direct sunlight. UV index will remain high, perpetuating the need for sunscreen.
Friday's game will follow this trend with only minor cooling, but otherwise dry and partly cloudy. Concerns arise for games scheduled on Saturday and Sunday with rain in the forecast for both days. The incoming storm is expected to bring over an inch of accumulating rain and will come alongside cooler temperatures and gusty west winds. This will bring about a stronger threat for rain delays to the scheduled weekend games.

Neighbors around the Logan Heights project worry about the impacts the new building will have on them.
But they say no one in the City, nor the developer, seem to care.
The 4-story, 18-unit apartment building is going up on the corner of Ocean View Boulevard and 28th street in Logan Heights. Three of those units are designated affordable housing. Crews just started breaking ground. Neighbors say they had no idea anything was happening on the lot where a duplex used to be, until a construction crew showed up last month.
Erica Ranasinghe says when she found out the building just a few yards from her house was going to be 4-stories, she immediately thought of her new 30,000 dollar solar system.

- Investigation of Baltimore bridge collapse picks up speed as divers recover 2 bodies from water
- Date posted
- Description
- BALTIMORE — The cargo ship that lost power and crashed into a bridge in Baltimore underwent “routine engine maintenance” in port beforehand, the U.S. Coast Guard said Wednesday, as divers recovered the bodies of two of six workers who plunged into the water when it collapsed. The others were presumed dead, and officials said search efforts had been exhausted.
Investigators on Wednesday began collecting evidence from the vessel that struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the previous day. The bodies of the two men were located in the morning inside a red pickup submerged in about 25 feet (7.6 meters) of water near the bridge’s middle span, Col. Roland L. Butler Jr., superintendent of Maryland State Police, announced at an evening news conference.
He identified the men as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, who was from Mexico and living in Baltimore, and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26, who was from Guatemala and living in Dundalk, Maryland.

- Why did the entire bridge collapse in Baltimore when it was hit by a container ship?
- Date posted
- Description
- After the collapse of the Key Bridge in Baltimore, many are wondering how the entire structure came down. Engineers say it’s mainly due to the bridge type-Truss.
In Truss bridges, there are no cable supports. All of the structure you see above the deck is designed to transfer the load to the eventual supports or piers that head underwater and into foundations.
When you take down one of those piers, the shape changes and the force of the crash is attempting to span twice as far in order to reach the next pier.

- A cargo ship lost power and rammed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, destroying the span in a matter of seconds and plunging it into the river in a terrifying collapse that could disrupt a vital shipping port for months. Six people were missing and presumed dead, and the search for them was suspended until the next day.
The ship’s crew issued a mayday call moments before the crash took down the Francis Scott Key Bridge, enabling authorities to limit vehicle traffic on the span, Maryland’s governor said.
The ship struck one of the bridge’s supports, causing the structure to collapse like a toy. A section of the span came to rest on the bow of the vessel, which caught fire.
With the ship barreling toward the bridge at “a very, very rapid speed,” authorities had just enough time to stop cars from coming over the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said.

One of the projects is finishing up in Carmel Valley where Caltrans is extending a bike path under Interstate 5.
Riders along the bike lane between State Route 56 and Interstate 5 have been dealing with detours lately, and currently, they have to share Carmel Valley Rd with vehicles.
“It’s tight and it's dark. It's under the freeway. It scares me to death. I walk my bike through there all the time,” said one bicyclist in the area.
When the work is complete, the tunnel under Interstate 5 will connect the two bike paths and allow bicyclists to avoid traffic.
