- Principal Shelene Livas was heartbroken when her school earned a failing grade from the state last August.
“It was a wake-up call,” she said of Pershing Elementary’s 2025 F grade. “It wasn’t reflective of who we are and what we do.”
The small elementary school has served the Government Hill neighborhood on San Antonio's East Side since 1959. Though the area is rapidly gentrifying, 99% of Pershing’s 300 students come from low-income households, according to state data.
In 2025, the school scored a 58 — or an F — one of the lowest ratings in Texas. But this year, Pershing and Livas had reason to celebrate: The school’s score jumped to 89, placing it among the state’s highest-rated campuses.
The SAISD school improved by 31 points — the biggest jump in the San Antonio area.
