- Date posted
- Description
- Due to uncertainty over RFA funding, we are publishing this special report marking 50 years since the Khmer Rouge capture of Cambodia’s capital ahead of the actual anniversary, which falls on April 17.
In 1975, a radical communist band of guerrilla fighters known as the Khmer Rouge conquered the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh. Their takeover ignited a genocide that claimed the lives of between 1.5 million and 2 million people, or a quarter of the country’s population.
Under the leadership of a man known as Brother Number One, or Pol Pot, a systematic campaign of persecution, killing and starvation began within hours of his troops claiming Phnom Penh on the morning of April 17, 1975.
On the 50th anniversary of the Khmer Rouge’s arrival in Phnom Penh, four of our colleagues at Radio Free Asia are sharing their personal stories for the first time.
This is the first story told by Sarann Nuon, senior manager for evaluation and train...

- RFA Tibetan journalist risks it all to report accurate news
- Date posted
- Description
- Persecution. Harassment. Loss of contact with family members.
This RFA Tibetan journalist has risked it all to report accurate, independent news about the atrocities faced by Tibetans in Tibet. “My family members in Tibet were persecuted on account of my work. … They are still – to this day – being harassed by the Chinese government,” he said.
How has RFA’s journalism impacted Tibetans? “From the widespread Tibet protests of 2008 to the wave of self-immolations and China’s systemic efforts to erase Tibetan identity, RFA has been instrumental in providing a rare window into Tibet,” he said.
On March 15, the federal grant agreement that makes it possible for RFA to operate in Asia and globally was abruptly canceled. We thank all of you for your support for RFA and its mission.

A Hong Kong social worker, Jackie Chen, who tried to mediate between police and protesters during the 2019 anti-government protests, was convicted of rioting in a retrial after being initially acquitted. Despite using a loudspeaker to urge police restraint, prosecutors accused her of participating in a riot. Her case highlights the authorities' tough stance on political cases, even against those with mild roles in the unrest. Before heading to court, Chen spoke exclusively with RFA about her thoughts on the case and what lies ahead.

- Six protesters were shot dead and six others injured after MNDAA troops opened fire on villagers opposing a Chinese-backed gold mine in northern Shan state, Myanmar. The shooting took place on March 5 near Nam Lane Creek, where locals have long protested against mining operations affecting their farmland. Following the attack, survivors and villagers gathered outside the MNDAA’s Township Administration Office in Mong See village, demanding justice.
The MNDAA has yet to respond, and China’s embassy in Yangon has not commented on its role in the mining operation. Tensions remain high as locals push for accountability.
