- Description
- U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on July 11 he had "positive and constructive" talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, amid tensions over tariffs and trade.
Rubio was in Malaysia on his first Asia trip since taking office, looking to stress U.S. commitment to the region at the East Asia Summit and ASEAN Regional Forum, as countries received notices of U.S. tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump this week.
Rubio had his first in-person talks with China's foreign minister
Wang sharply criticized Washington during talks with Asian counterparts in Malaysia, calling the U.S. tariffs "typical unilateral bullying behavior."
Both sides described their meeting as positive and constructive. Rubio said the odds of Trump meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping were high.

- Two U.S. B-52H nuclear-capable strategic bombers drill with Japan, South Korea | Radio Free Asia
- Date posted
- Description
- South Korea’s defense ministry released video footage on July 11 showing a joint air drill it held with Japan and the United States that involved two U.S. B-52 strategic bombers and fighter jets over international waters.
It was the first time this year that a U.S. B-52H strategic bomber was deployed to the Korean Peninsula for a drill, conducted to improve deterrence against North Korea's increasing nuclear and missile threats, the defense ministry said.
The drills came as the three countries' defense chiefs held an annual meeting in Seoul on Friday, where they recognised the importance of close trilateral cooperation in addressing security challenges posed by North Korea, in the Indo-Pacific and beyond, the defense ministry said in a statement.
The three countries have boosted security cooperation in recent years, as tensions have increased stemming from North Korea's military developments and Pyongyang's deepening military ties with Russia.

- In less than a year as general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, To Lam has made moves likened to the drastic cuts that U.S. President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk have implemented to U.S. federal agencies through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
To Lam has merged ministries and central government agencies, reduced the number of provinces and cities by half, and dismantled district-level administrative units.
Why did To Lam move so fast with reforms, and what are the political, social, and economic impacts?

- Description
- "I hope to live beyond 130 years," said Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama at a long life prayer ceremony in Dharamsala, India, one day before his 90th birthday.
The ceremony was joined by Indian government officials, spiritual heads of major Tibetan Buddhist groups, and included the invocation of various Dharma protectors.
Addressing the gathering, the Dalai Lama made reference to his meeting with Mao Zedong in Beijing in the 1950s.
"When I met Mao Zedong in China, he told me that 'religion is poison' but I did not respond. He then gave me a side eye, and I felt compassion for him."
Also attending the event was actor and long-time Tibetan rights supporter Richard Gere.

- The three-day Tibetan religious conference has ended in Dharamsala. Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, who confirmed his succession plan would abide by traditions of his reincarnation and while he didn't mention China by name, said “No one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter."
A senior Indian minister said that only the Dalai Lama and the organization he set up have the authority to identify his successor as the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, in a rare comment that contradicts China’s long-held position.
Beijing says it has the right to approve the Dalai Lama’s successor as a legacy from imperial times.

- What are Thailand and Cambodia fighting about? | RFA Perspectives (Radio Free Asia)
- Date posted
- Description
- Thailand is resisting Cambodia's push to take their border dispute to the U.N.'s International Court of Justice after a Cambodian soldier died in a border shootout in Chong Bok.
It was the latest flare-up in a rift between Thailand and Cambodia over the demarcation of their 800-kilometer-long land border, which stirs nationalist sentiment on both sides. The differences are rooted in history. Part of the long-burning disagreement is over which maps to use.
Cambodia is calling for the U.N. court to rule on the demarcation of the border at three ancient Khmer temples - Ta Moan Thom, Ta Moan Toch and Ta Krabei - and at an area near to where the May 28 shootout happened.

- Description
- Radio Free Asia was created in the aftermath of the 1989 Tiananmen Square pro-democracy protests in China. Across Asia, when despots and dictators use manipulation and misinformation to cling to power, it's RFA's uncensored reporting that delivers unvarnished truth with journalism in Burmese, Cantonese, Khmer, Korean, Lao, Mandarin, Tibetan, Uyghur, Vietnamese, and English.
On March 15, 2025, the federal grant agreement that funds Radio Free Asia was abruptly terminated. RFA is actively fighting the termination in court. We've had to reduce 90 percent of our editorial staff.
Language services have gone dark.
There is still a small team of journalists remaining at RFA and we're determined to serve our audiences.
In places where free speech and a free press are under attack — accurate, objective, and fair reporting matters now more than ever,
