The national security trial of pro-democracy publisher Jimmy Lai is set to resume Wednesday in Hong Kong after months of delay. Lai, 76, founder of the now-closed Apple Daily newspaper, has been held in solitary confinement since 2020. The trial, which began in December 2023, was expected to last 80 days but has faced repeated adjournments. Lai is charged with collusion with foreign forces and sedition, accusations he denies. If convicted, he faces life in prison. Rights groups have criticized the trial as politically motivated. Lai’s son, Sebastien, has voiced concerns about the impact of prolonged solitary confinement on his father’s health, warning it poses a grave risk to his life. #JimmyLai #hongkong #nationalsecuritylaw #appledaily

- Hong Kong’s '47 Activists Case': A record-breaking political trial | Radio Free Asia (RFA)
- Date posted

- Description
- In January 2021, Hong Kong police arrested 55 pro-democracy activists, charging 47 with "subversion of state power" in the largest National Security Law case in Hong Kong’s history.
All 47 defendants faced a nearly 40-hour, four-day "marathon-style" hearing. The court proceedings left many exhausted, with some fainting and requiring hospitalization.
Many of the accused have been detained for over three and a half years without trial.
The trial, conducted without a jury and overseen by three handpicked judges, has drawn comparisons to public trials in mainland China, fueling widespread concerns over Hong Kong’s eroding freedoms. The 47 defendants are scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 19.
Protests in support of the defendants have broken out in Taipei, reflecting international concern over the erosion of democracy and human rights in Hong Kong.

- Yuen Long lamppost 'FA8964' has disappeared | Radio Free Asia (RFA)
- Date posted
- Description
- A lamppost in the Yuen Long district of Hong Kong, originally marked "FA8964"—a reference to the June 4 Tiananmen Square incident—has sparked public attention after its number was changed to "GD8332." Nearby lampposts were also renumbered. Previously, "FA8964" was noted for "surviving" after a repair in June last year. Recently repainted and altered, the lamppost’s change prompted criticism, with locals suggesting that authorities fear even a symbolic number. The Highways Department stated that the renumbering was "for management convenience," but the move has intensified public memory of "8964" and its significance.
