- On the show today, we celebrate India's rich weaving heritage on the occasion of National Handloom Day. Observed every year on 7th August, the day commemorates the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905—a defining moment that championed indigenous products and the spirit of self-reliance. India's handloom tradition is among the oldest in the world, with its origins tracing back to the Indus Valley Civilisation. References to spinning and weaving are found in the Rigveda, the Ramayana, and the Mahabharata, while the exceptional quality of Indian cotton and silk is documented in the works of Kautilya. Over centuries, these weaving traditions have been preserved and refined, with every region of the country developing its own distinctive techniques, motifs and identities. In 2015, the institution of National Handloom Day gave this enduring legacy a dedicated national platform, recognising the invaluable socio-economic and cultural contribution of India's handloom weavers. The proposed amendments aim to strengthen transparency, tighten oversight, and prevent the misuse of overseas funding.
