At 26.5 metres long and five times higher than a double decker bus, the piece of machinery could only travel at walking pace along three miles of the motorway.
The structure is part of a £45 million furnace that is being installed at Essar’s Stanlow oil refinery and will be the first capable of running entirely on hydrogen.
It was built 6,000 miles away in Thailand and carried by ship to the Port of Liverpool before being transferred to a barge for the short trip across the River Mersey, through the locks into the Manchester Ship Canal and on to a holding bay near National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port.

- Ryan Reynolds surprised a 13-year-old in Newcastle with a message of support after the teenager underwent open-heart surgery.
Ivan Hollingsworth, 47, from Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear, sent a message out on Twitter on Tuesday evening on behalf of his son Seb, asking “How do we get a Marvel Studios Superhero to send a message to our Heart Hero Seb?”
Deadpool star Reynolds replied “Can you open your DMs?” sending Mr Hollingsworth’s phone into overdrive before arranging a video message which was played for Seb in his hospital bed in Newcastle.
Seb was born with a congenital heart defect which required him to have “life-saving” surgery when he was 16-weeks-old, according to his father.
Before Christmas, the family found out he would require more intervention, and on Monday he underwent major open-heart surgery.

Camilla celebrated the 160th anniversary of the famous animal welfare charity by inviting volunteers, supporters, and celebrity ambassadors Paul O’Grady, Amanda Holden and author Jacqueline Wilson to her Clarence House home.
The charity has seen an influx of abandoned pets, as their owners return to work as the pandemic eased, and raised the prospect of the cost of living crisis adding to the numbers left at its centres.
After being welcomed by a doggy guard of honour the duchess mingled with her guests as she celebrated the charity she supports as royal patron, founded by Mary Tealby in 1860 as The Temporary Home for Lost and Starving Dogs.
