Rachel Reeves’ Budget, delivered yesterday, set out roughly £26 billion in tax rises aimed at stabilising the public finances while funding higher public-service spending. The headline measures included abolishing the two-child benefit cap and freezing income-tax and National Insurance thresholds until 2030–31, a move expected to draw millions more workers into higher tax bands over time.
Reeves also confirmed a future cap on pension salary-sacrifice contributions — from 2029, only the first £2,000 a year will receive full relief — alongside increases in taxes on dividends, savings income, and a new surcharge on properties valued above £2 million. Reports are that, last night, allies of Starmer briefed hard to some high-profile journalists that the PM is expecting a leadership challenge following the budget. Wes Streeting, the alleged man in question, declared on this morning's broadcast round that he is "a faithful", and that press briefings against him were "the worst attack on a faithful since Joe Marler was banished in The Traitors final".

At a time when the cost of living continues to rise and secure work remains difficult to find, many we spoke to responded with anger and disbelief. “Does he want me to starve?” one young person asked. Another added, “I have to work two jobs just to make ends meet.”
