Bret Amundson is on the St. Croix River fishing with Steve McLean and his son Jake, who conveys his experience surviving childhood leukemia. Then the Prairie Sportsman crew travels the St. Croix from Taylors Falls to its confluence with the Mississippi River.
Jake McLean has grown up in the outdoors and spent countless hours fishing the St. Croix River for trophy sturgeon, catfish and walleyes with his dad and grandpa. Bret Amundson is netting and smoking tullibees with Mark and Jason Markkula near Park Rapids, then checks out how non-native cattails are choking waterfowl habitats.
Netting tullibee is a traditional way of fishing in Minnesota with fewer than 1,000 participants each year. Instead of rods, reels and tackle, anglers use nets and saws in specially designated lakes to target the fish. Tullibees (also known as cisco or herring) are in the trout/salmon family and are generally forage for more popular game species such as walleye, muskie, northern or lake trout. They’re particularly sensitive to water temperatures and found only in deep lakes with cold water. After netting tullibees, the Markullas show how to prepare them for a smoker, which is the most common w...

Years ago, Amy Smith of Hugo was introduced to spearing. She dragged her sister Tami Kotila of Maple Lake along and they both became enthusiasts. Tami, who is crafty with tools, thought the decoys were too expensive so she decided to make her own, and ice anglers started asking if they could purchase them.
