21:21 - Shoreline Plantings
Host Bret Amundson travels to southern Minnesota to angle for walleyes near Albert Lea then walks the grass for pheasants near Austin. The Crow River Trail Guards of Paynesville connect kids to the outdoors, and homeowners are planting native wildflowers and grasses on shorelines to protect water quality.
Bret is at Fountain Lake in Albert Lea for the Governor’s Fishing Opener. The 521-acre lake is one of the largest in the area, with a maximum depth of only 14 feet. Because southern lakes are warmer longer than northern lakes, walleye fry that are stocked every other year can reach 14 inches in a few years. But the shallow lakes are filled with sediment. To restore Fountain Lake, the Shell Rock River Watershed District has been dredging bays for the past two summers to increase 4 to 5 foot depths to 1...

The Prairie Sportsman crew paddles the Minnesota River with Natalie Warren, one of the first women to canoe 2,000 miles from Fort Snelling to Hudson Bay, then climbs atop a Mayo Clinic building to see peregrine falcons that were brought back from extinction in the Upper Midwest. In Woodbury, a living fence between four backyards prevents polluted stormwater runoff.
In 2011, Natalie Warren and Anne Raiho were the first two women to paddle 2,000 miles from Minneapolis to Hudson Bay, following the route immortalized by Eric Sevareid in his book “Canoeing with the Cree.” Prairie Sportsman’s crew canoed with Natalie on a section of this journey near Mankato to see why canoers and kayakers like to explore the Minnesota despite its muddy reputation.

Lake of the Woods produces scores of walleye, sturgeon, crappies and bass, but is also a great place to hunt waterfowl with many acres of open fields as well as lakes and forests. Bret gets plenty of action fishing and hunting on a trip organized by the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers and River Bend Resort.
Then Bret travels to Fergus Falls for a nontoxic copper shot versus lead shot demonstration. For years, lead bullets have been the ammunition of choice for big game hunters. While waterfowl ...

Bret Amundson hunts Minnesota’s only native prairie grouse, the sharptail, in east central Minnesota where wildlife biologists are working to save the bird’s declining population, and White Earth Nation dancers pay tribute to “Mr. Grouse” John Toepfer, a long-time prairie grouse researcher.
Host Bret Amundson goes sharp-tailed grouse hunting at the Holy Cow Ranch near Hinckley with game managers, biologists and outdoor enthusiasts. Then he watches sharpie males stake out their territory on a lek near Baudette. The sharptail was common throughout Minnesota in the early 1900s, but as its native grassland habitat declined, so did the sharpie’s population.
