- Act 57, passed by the Republic of Hawaiʻi in 1896, essentially erased Hawaiian language from the school system. But it survived in the newspapers, the Hawaiian churches, and the arts.
Even though the Hawaiian language was repressed, mele Hawaiʻi was booming. Hawaiian musicians were traveling internationally to prestigious venues.
“You couldn’t speak Hawaiian, but we’d like you to sing. We don’t want you to speak your language. But please come sing at our party and our lūʻau.”
Hawaiʻi Public Radio host Paige Okamura explains how musicians continued to share their language and culture in spite of the oppression they faced.

- For the first time ever, PBS Hawaiʻi is airing Parts 1 and 2 of “In Hawaiian Hands: The Story of Reggae in Hawai’i.” 📺
As reggae emerged in Jamaica in the late 1960s, it became more than just music. It was a powerful vehicle to communicate resistance to colonialism and slavery. It also became a symbol of unity.
This 2-part film chronicles how local artists began to adopt and adapt the reggae beat, blending it with island sensibilities to create a distinctly new sound: Jawaiian. With the explosion of popularity came an immediate backlash. The strong response prompted discussions of cultural authenticity, appropriation and the future of Hawaiian identity.
