- We look back on the day that the town of Pāhala said goodbye to Kaʻū Sugar almost 30 years ago.
Cameraman Cliff Watson and photographer Franco Salmoiraghi documented the sugar plantation and mill before it closed, getting stories from the workers whose lives have been molded over time by this industry. It’s the passing of a lifestyle that dominated this isolated community for over 125 years.
“For us, it was an opportunity to be in Pāhala at a moment of important social, cultural and technological change... These video and still photographs will hopefully find a true value for the community in the years to come. Perhaps 50 years from now, the images will help those with family roots here to know their ancestors and their history.”

As reggae emerged in Jamaica in the late 1960s, it became more than just music. It was a powerful vehicle to communicate resistance to colonialism and slavery. It also became a symbol of unity.
This 2-part film chronicles how local artists began to adopt and adapt the reggae beat, blending it with island sensibilities to create a distinctly new sound: Jawaiian. With the explosion of popularity came an immediate backlash. The strong response prompted discussions of cultural authenticity, appropriation and the future of Hawaiian identity.
