- Description
- Promoting economic and social progress throughout the world has been the aim of the OECD since it opened in September 1961. One member country that has embodied this goal since the outset is Ireland. Its strong economic performances, the quality of life and its appeal to global investors are just some illustrations of this.
So, as we build the post-pandemic world, what lessons can we draw from Ireland? For instance, is globalisation a problem or the solution?
In March, to help mark the organisation’s 60th anniversary and also to mark another global celebration, Saint Patrick’s Day, OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría and Ireland’s Finance Minister Paschal Donohue sat down with Harvard economist Megan Greene to discuss such questions. This OECD Podcast presents the highlights of their online conversation, and includes insights on ongoing talks about digital tax in an integrated world. The event was introduced by Ambassador Dermot Nolan, Ireland’s per...

- Violence against women is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in the world. More than one in three women worldwide say they experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. The pandemic has made things worse: confinement trapped millions of women around the world at home with their abusers. In the first episode of the OECD podcast series “Truth Hurts” Charlotte Kneer, CEO of Reigate and Barnstead Women’s Aid, tells Monika Queisser how her personal experience with intimate partner violence brought her to running shelters, why it can be so difficult to leave an abusive relationship, and what governments must do to prevent domestic violence against women and offer better support for survivors.

- The COVID-19 pandemic forced school closures in nearly all countries in 2020, with as much as 55 in-person learning days lost for young children and as many as 100 days lost for high school students. The impact of this disproportionately affected those from disadvantaged backgrounds, who were more likely to lack the resources for effective remote learning. The need to strengthen educational opportunities is not new, but the impact of COVID-19 on learning has made this challenge even more pressing. Marie-Helene Doumet, senior analyst for education and skills at the OECD, discusses lessons learned from the pandemic and what governments can do to support equity in education.

This global tax deal – the outcome of negotiations co-ordinated by the OECD for much of the last decade – updates key elements of the century-old international tax system which is no longer fit for purpose in a globalised and digitalised 21st century economy and puts a floor on tax competition by setting a global minimum corporate tax.

The OECD Employment Outlook 2021 was presented virtually by the OECD Secretary-General, Mr. Mathias Cormann, and the OECD Director for Employment, Labour and Social Affairs, Mr. Stefano Scarpetta, at a press conference on 7 July, 2021. Watch this video to learn about the key findings.
The pandemic has severely affected livelihoods across the globe. What are the risks? When will countries see a return to pre-pandemic employment levels? As vaccination campaigns continue and some countries begin to loosen COVID restrictions, economic growth is expected to accelerate. The unprecedented levels of assistance that countries provided through job retention schemes and income support have saved up to 21 million jobs and helped many households make it through the pandemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic has undeniably deepened existing social and economic divides. Unemployment is high and jobs are not expected to make ...

- Description
- Watch the press conference of the OECD Economic Outlook report launched on 31 May 2021 by OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurria and Chief Economist Laurence Boone. What are the key findings of this global Economic Outlook report published a little more than a year since the Covid-19 pandemic struck the world? How is the world coping with this crisis, and in particular how is the global economy faring?
The analyses and projections say that global prospects are improving but the performance diverges strongly across countries. Prospects for the world economy have brightened but this is no ordinary recovery due to the unprecedented conditions. It is likely to remain uneven and dependent on the effectiveness of vaccination programmes and public health policies.
Some countries are recovering much faster than others. Korea and the United States are reaching pre-pandemic per capita income levels after about 18 months. Much of Europe is expected to take nearly 3 years ...

Progress in vaccination in advanced countries and massive government support for people and companies are boosting prospects for the global economy, and the outlook is better in 2021 and 2022. But many economies will still remain below levels expected before the pandemic, even at the end of 2022. What can governments do about this uneven recovery? Speed up the pace of vaccination worldwide, boost global health cooperation, support businesses and households and begin laying the groundwork for a stronger, more sustainable economy.

- This OECD virtual event brings together high-level policy makers and shapers from across the globe to launch the OECD Council Recommendation on Broadband Connectivity. Reliable and fast connectivity is key for digital transformation. With more people working, learning, and socialising online, the COVID-19 crisis has shown the importance of access to high-quality broadband services, for all, and at affordable prices.
However, persistent connectivity disparities are likely to accentuate the consequences of the crisis and of digital divides more generally. In this unprecedented situation, the accessibility, capability and resilience of broadband networks have become even more critical. As such, this event provides a unique opportunity to learn about developments and best policy practices to extend and upgrade communication networks.
