- Description
- Iceland has topped global charts on gender equality for nearly a decade. One of the country’s more radical approaches to breaking gender stereotypes is a school method called Hjalli. Margrét Pála Ólafsdóttir opened the first Hjalli pre-school in 1989. Here, children play with open-ended toys, wear school uniforms and use gender-neutral learning materials. More unusually, girls and boys have separate classes throughout most of the day. In 2006, Margrét Pála Ólafsdóttir received The Knight’s Cross of the Icelandic Order of the Falcon from the President of Iceland for innovation in education. She tell us what she thinks it takes to undo children’s gender biases. Host: Clara Young; Producer: Ilse Sánchez Pacheco

- Description
- The COVID-19 pandemic forced school closures in nearly all countries in 2020, with as much as 55 in-person learning days lost for young children and as many as 100 days lost for high school students. The impact of this disproportionately affected those from disadvantaged backgrounds, who were more likely to lack the resources for effective remote learning. The need to strengthen educational opportunities is not new, but the impact of COVID-19 on learning has made this challenge even more pressing. Marie-Helene Doumet, senior analyst for education and skills at the OECD, discusses lessons learned from the pandemic and what governments can do to support equity in education.

- If a self-driving car gets into an accident, who’s to blame — the person in the car, or the technology powering the vehicle? What about the manufacturer? If an automated job-search tool discriminates based on race or gender, who’s at fault — the software, or the company? We look at the complex ethical challenges central to AI, the fundamental philosophical questions — about human’s relationship with technology — and more practical concerns, about how to best regulate these new tools.
This is the final episode in a series on artificial intelligence, brought to you by the OECD’s Global Parliamentary Network and the European Parliament’s Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA).

- Description
- Description

At least four million Ukrainians have fled the country and nearly seven million are internally displaced. Beyond Ukraine, the conflict is upending the global economy, deepening pressure on vulnerable households still reeling from the pandemic. And with Russia and Ukraine as major exporters of wheat, the war could destabilise the global food supply and has prompted the U.N. to warn that food insecurity could rise. In March, the OECD released an in-depth report on the Economic and Social Impacts and Policy Implications of the War in Ukraine. The OECD estimates that global economic growth will drop by more than one percentage point this year due to the conflict, and already high inflation could rise by an additional 2.5 percentage points globally. - Plastic is everywhere. Plastic helps us preserve food, insulate constructions, it is used in electronics, it makes vehicles more fuel-efficient, and far more. Yet, the sheer magnitude of plastics consumption in our societies results in a high production-related carbon footprint, high volumes of waste, persistent pollution, and great harm to wildlife and ecosystems. Plastic waste reached 353 million tonnes in 2019, doubling in just 20 years and exerting immense pressure on the planet. Only 9% is recycled, while 22% is dumped in uncontrolled sites, burned in open pits or ends up in rivers and oceans. This is disastrous to our planet.
Timely and ambitious policies can drastically reduce future environmental damages and in particular plastic leakage to the environment. Growing awareness of plastic pollution is steering public opinion and is paving the for stronger policy intervention by governments on this front.

- Economic Recovery - A Balancing Act

- Description
- The global economic recovery is continuing, but has lost momentum and is becoming increasingly imbalanced, according to the OECD’s latest Economic Outlook. The failure to ensure rapid and effective vaccination everywhere is proving costly, with uncertainty remaining high due to the continued emergence of new variants of the virus. Economic activity in most OECD countries has now surpassed where it was in late-2019, and is gradually returning to the path expected before the pandemic. However, lower-income economies, particularly those where vaccination rates against COVID-19 are still low, are at risk of being left behind. The lack of global coordination on vaccine deployment remains a major risk. Government policies should focus on improving health systems, boosting infrastructure, helping children catch up their missing months of schooling and training people for the jobs that are needed in a changing world.

- Description

- Description
- On December 14 2020, the OECD marked its 60th anniversary. The coronavirus crisis reminds us once again, that we can build our world back better only if we work closely together. The OECD is an international organisation established in 1960 that works collaboratively with governments, organisations, and civil society to build better policies for better lives. Throughout its history, the OECD has been a catalyst for change in many aspects of public policy. We encourage debate, provide evidence and promote a shared understanding of critical global issues.
The last ten years have been a decade of transformation. From improving economic performance and creating jobs, to building strong education systems, fighting inequalities, preventing international tax avoidance and evasion, we provide an important platform for dialogue and knowledge, sharing data and analysis, exchange of experiences, best practices, and advice on public policies and international standard setting.
