It has been nearly 120,000 years since Earth was this warm, and 40,000 years since some ice-swathed Arctic lands have seen the sun.
This is one conclusion of a study published Friday in the journal Nature Communications, in which researchers carbon-dated plants collected at the edges of 30 ice caps on Baffin Island, in the Canadian Inuit territory of Nunavut.

Apple has temporarily disabled the Group FaceTime feature while it works to fix a major security glitch that enables users to listen in on the people they are calling, even if the recipient doesn’t answer.
A video showing the steps required to trigger the bug went viral on Twitter and Snapchat Monday evening. It prompted dozens of copycat videos, several of which also exposed that a phone’s front-facing camera can also be made vulnerable by the flaw.

“Roma” filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón’s largely autobiographical movie drawing from his experiences being raised by a nanny in Mexico City also netted a best director nomination for Cuarón, as well as nods for Yalitza Aparicio for Best Actress and Marina de Tavira for Best Supporting Actress.

Nearly three months after her parents were found dead in their Wisconsin home, 13-year-old Jayme Closs emerged from the woods, malnourished and dirty with matted hair, and then flagged down a woman walking her dog for help.
Jake Thomas Patterson, 21, was arrested early Thursday evening just minutes after the missing teen turned up in the rural town of Gordon, some 70 miles away from her home in Barron. A Douglas County patrol sergeant took the suspect into custody after spotting a vehicle matching a description Jayme had given to authorities.
Authorities do not yet know the suspect’s connection to Jayme, but believe she was his intended target — not her parents.

The New York Transit Museum's model train exhibit is in its 17th year at the Grand Central Gallery Annex and Store. And it’s open to all, free of charge, though February.
The model features Lionel trains running though a two-level model of New York City, then stretching from Grand Central to a winter wonderland countryside. The 34-foot long track features trains from Metro North, the Long Island Rail Road, as well as the New York City Subway.

Michael Cohen, President Trump’s former personal attorney, pleaded guilty Thursday to making false statements to Congress about a scuttled Moscow Trump Tower project and his contacts with Russians during the presidential campaign.
Cohen made a surprise appearance in federal court in lower Manhattan Thursday morning, where he entered his plea as part of a deal with special counsel Robert Mueller in the ongoing federal investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
He admitted to making false statements in 2017 to the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence about plans to build a Trump Tower in Moscow and his communications with the Kremlin.

From China, from Iraq, from Mexico and Venezuela. More than 100,000 were filed in the United States in 2017 alone.
Babatunde Scott-Ashley fled his home country of Nigeria when he was 27. He arrived in March 2017 seeking asylum after facing violence and persecution for being gay.
The African nation is notorious for its treatment of homosexuals. Police and gangs harass, beat and persecute people who are believed to be gay. After facing unimaginable hate and abuse, Babatunde believed he had no choice but to escape a country that refused to protect him.
Babatunde’s case began after meeting Shanti Tharayil, a lawyer with the Community Development Project at the Urban Justice Center, who helped him submit his case for asylum.
We followed him though that entire process.

One of three people charged in the New Jersey GoFundMe scandal claims she is just an innocent victim.
Kate McClure, who was arrested along with boyfriend Mark D'Amico and homeless man Johnny Bobbitt, are accused of raising $400,000 under false pretenses. However, McClure believed she was just "helping a homeless veteran," according to her lawyer.
"She is a wonderful person," James Gerrow told ABC News on Monday. "The other side of it is she is a bit naive."
