- Are you new to NV or Eastern CA? Or maybe you are moving or have moved to a new neighborhood. Don’t let the dry climate fool you, this area has a history of major flooding, and it is only a matter of time before we flood again. So how can you find out if your home is at risk, and what can you do about it? We will explain that and provide you with some additional resources in this video.
So, how do you find out if your home is at risk of flooding?
The National Flood Hazard Layer can tell you if your home is in or out of a designated Special Flood Hazard Area
http://www.nevadafloods.org/
Visit the NevadaFloods.org website. Go to the Know Your Risk tab and select Will You Flood? This will bring you to the FEMA Map Service Center and display the Special Flood Hazard Areas. Type in your address, (a location in Hidden Valley), give it a generous time to load, and read the map.
Remember - where it can rain, it can flood. You c...

- Here is the balloon release by our OPL (Observation Program Leader) from Friday, January 29th during a high wind event in Reno. Wind gusts were around 60 MPH. A couple of things to note. (1) The radiosonde did not hit the ground towards the end of the video. (2) More importantly, this data is directly fed into weather models that help to predict weather downstream, like for the midwest blizzard occurring right now.

- Description
- Thunderstorms brought heavy rains to western Nevada on Tuesday July 8 2014, with radar estimates of nearly 1 to 2 inches of rain per hour. We setup our timelapse camera ahead of the storms to see what we could capture. The images start at 230 pm and are every 30 seconds. Here are the results! Quite a potpourri of weather -- ranging from wet microburst rain cores descending on Reno/Sparks, to clouds indicating a wind shift from moist south/southeast to a drier westerly flow as the storms ended. There's a nice sunset treat toward the end as the clouds break and see if you can spot the moon!

- Runtime

- Date posted
- Description
- Dry microbursts from nearby thunderstorms produced wind gusts to 71 mph in the Reno/Sparks area around 6 PM July 1, 2014. This timelapse was taken from 2 to 7 PM with images every 30 seconds. A super dry airmass below the clouds with humidity of only 5-8% contributed to an environment favorable for microbursts. Microbursts are downward directed pulses of wind from thunderstorms that slam into the ground producing intense winds that can result in damage. View in 720p HD mode.
