Firefighters on Thursday started forming the ramp that would enable heavy machinery to clear away the soil, which is mixed with structural debris and other rubble. They expect to complete the 4x30-meter ramp within a few days.
A road in Yashio City suddenly caved in on Tuesday and a truck fell into the sinkhole. Rescue operations were complicated when another cave-in appeared nearby. The two sinkholes later merged and expanded into a depression about 20 meters in diameter. Firefighters have been unable to contact the driver since Tuesday afternoon.
Prefectural officials believe the first cave-in was caused by a ruptured sewage pipe roughly 10 meters underground.

- Japanese researchers say urination is contagious among chimpanzees.
When one of the primates relieves itself, others in the group quickly follow suit. The pattern is consistent with other group imitation behaviors, such as yawning or stretching.
Onishi Ena of the Kyoto University Wildlife Research Center and her colleagues observed 20 captive chimpanzees over 600 hours in Kumamoto Prefecture, southwestern Japan. They found that the shorter the distance between chimps in a group, the more likely they would relieve themselves within just over three minutes after the first one. Onishi said the motives for this behavior remain a mystery, though they may be using it to try to establish relationships within the group.

- Description
- People in Niigata Prefecture in central Japan embraced the cold for a ritual meant to bring good fortune in the New Year.
The event takes place annually on the night of January 14 in the Yasuda District of Agano City. Participants sprint from one Shinto shrine to another to offer prayers while shouting and carrying torches. About 40 people joined this year, some going shirtless and others donning judo uniforms. They started at Sumiyoshi Shrine and doused each other with buckets of water. They then ran to Yasuda Hachimangu Shrine, shouting as local residents cheered them on by splashing them with water. Once at the shrine, the participants huddled together to keep warm. They then jumped into a pool of cold water at the gateway to purify themselves, drawing cheers from the crowd. Afterward, they walked up to the shrine and prayed for the safety and health of their families in the year ahead. #japan #traditional #ritual #niigata #festival

- People in Japan mark the 30th anniversary of the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake that claimed the lives of more than 6,400 people. The magnitude 7.3 quake struck before dawn on January 17th, devastating Kobe City in western Japan and surrounding areas. 30 years later, people attended the annual gathering at a park in Kobe to remember the disaster and those who lost their lives. Lanterns form the date 1-17 and spell out the Japanese word "yorisou," which means to stand with. There was a moment of silence at 5:46 a.m., the exact time the quake occurred. More than 100 billion dollars has been spent on recovery efforts. In October, the last building included in reconstruction projects was completed. #japan #earthquake #disaster

The lander will make its approach through a series of swing-by maneuvers, before attempting to touch down between late May and early June. Success would make ispace the first Japanese company to put a lander on the moon. #japan #space #moon #spacecraft

- Young adults in Kitakyushu, a city in western Japan, splashed out in bright colors and unusual costumes in January, on Coming of Age day - celebrating becoming 20 years of age.
Though celebrations take place around Japan, Kitakyushu is famous for its unique style, and young people there took full advantage to let their hair down - or put it up, as the case might be, sometimes in rainbow colors.
In 2022, Japan’s legal age of adulthood was lowered from 20 to 18, but many people still mark the milestone when they turn 20. #japan #fukuoka #kimono #fashion
