A talking mascot figure was put on display at the entrance to the prime minister's office. The figure is equipped with sensors that detect when people approach. When Ishiba entered the office on Friday, Myaku-Myaku spoke to him. The two then had a friendly chat. The mascot said the Expo is a great opportunity to deepen exchange with the world. It also asked him to enter the Grand Ring, a wooden structure symbolizing the event. Ishiba is scheduled to attend the opening ceremony on Saturday. They both hoped for the event’s success, and Ishiba bowed deeply to Myaku-Myaku.

- People across Japan are remembering the more than 20,000 lives lost 14 years ago when an unprecedented disaster struck on March 11, 2011. That day, a massive earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan's eastern Pacific coast and caused one of the world's worst nuclear accidents -- the effects of which are still felt today. Officials say more than 22,000 people died or went missing. That figure includes deaths that occurred later due to disaster-related health problems or other complications. At 2:46 p.m. a magnitude 9.0 quake struck off Japan's northeastern coast. It was followed by tsunami – reportedly more than 10 meters high in some areas – that inundated vast stretches of coastline. The Tokyo Electric Power Company's Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant suffered meltdowns. The disaster and the accident forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate their homes. - A 108-year-old Japanese woman in Tochigi Prefecture has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest female barber. Hakoishi Shitsui was born in 1916. After obtaining a barber's license in Tokyo, she opened a salon with her husband in the capital. But he died during World War Two and they lost the store. Hakoishi then opened a salon in Nakagawa Town, Tochigi Prefecture, after the war ended. She still gets out her scissors when regular customers ask her for a cut.
