As part of a crackdown on what China considers "vulgar, immoral and unhealthy content," the government's new regulations ban depictions of gay people on TV.
One of the first victims of these new regulations was a show called "Addicted," which featured two men in gay relationships. The show was pulled from Chinese streaming sites last week.
The new rules are a part of the continued effort by Chinese President Xi Jinping to limit what the country's media produce. In a 2014 speech, Xi stressed art must serve a social purpose and encouraged "socialist artwork."
It's not just gay relationships that are being banned from TV. Smoking, adultery, suggestive clothing and even things like witchcraft and reincarnation are at issue under the new guidelines.
Over the past two decades, the LGBT community has made a lot of progress toward social acceptance in China. However, stigma remains. In 2013, 61 percent of people polled in China said homosexuality wasn'...

- A pro-ISIS hacking team had promised to hack Google, so it did. But it got the wrong one.
Instead it hacked an Indian website called Add Google Online — so not quite Google.
And then the ISIS hackers got hacked by someone else.
A hacker who goes by n3far1ous left the message "Eat this, ISIS."
The pro-ISIS hacking group, or the "Caliphate Cyber Army," likes to hack low-profile sites, like this store that sells scales or this Middle Eastern sign store.
Probably the group's biggest success was hacking the U.S. Central Command accounts on Twitter and YouTube.

Spanish police just seized 20,000 uniforms meant for terrorists. That's 11,000 pounds of uniforms.
They were going to ISIS and Al-Nusra Front, according to the police.
The military uniforms and other clothing were in containers marked "second-hand clothes," according to Spanish outlets. Police found the containers in two Spanish ports.
Last month, Spanish police arrested seven people in connection with supporting terrorists. These clothes were reportedly connected to those arrests.

A team of refugees will compete at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro after getting approval from the International Olympic Committee.
IOC President Thomas Bach made the official announcement late Wednesday, saying Team Refugee Olympic Athletes (ROA) will be made up of United Nations-verified refugees and "treated like all the other teams."
While 43 prospective athletes have been identified for the team, IOC officials say there will likely be between five and 10 athletes competing under the Olympic flag. The athletes would be given funds to train for the games.
The decision comes as the world is in the midst of a so-called "global refugee crisis." A surge of people are fleeing war-torn countries in the Middle East and heading mainly to countries in Europe.

- The United Nations has unanimously approved new sanctions on North Korea.
But when it comes to the average North Korean, not a whole lot is going to change.
These fresh sanctions, which are some of the toughest yet, are the product of around two months of negotiations between the U.S. and China after North Korea tested a nuclear weapon and launched a satellite.
The sanctions hit valuable exports from Pyongyang, like rare earth materials, gold and iron. They also prevent North Korea from snatching up aviation fuel and various weapons.
To top it off, all cargo going in and out of North Korea must be inspected. Previously, the cargo was only to be inspected if there was reason to believe it could have contraband aboard.
All fairly bad news for North Korea and its military aspirations. But for the average North Korean?
The sanctions aren’t supposed to affect North Korean citizens. Instead, they’re targeting North Korean higher-ups and the regime’s...

- French police are urging parents to not post photos of their children to Facebook, after a chain-post went viral last month urging parents to share pictures of their kids on the site.
The new counter-message (to not share those photos) is being circulated for a couple of reasons: If photos are shared publicly rather than just with friends, authorities say there's a chance sexual predators could get the pictures.
But also because when the children grow up, they could take legal action against their parents — all because of some photos shared online.
That's right. The Verge reports, "One French expert says parents may even face future lawsuits from their children for violating their privacy."
But, hold on a sec. Even if you had old embarrassing photos of yourself posted to Facebook, that's no reason to sue mom or dad.
Future adults, here's another way to get rid of those humiliating photos that your parents posted on Facebook.

Air pollution in China kills an estimated 1.6 million people every year.
"The air quality in China has improved. Most people don’t realize it, but in fact there has been concerted action in the last three years," Yang said.
In December 2015, Beijing issued its first ever red alert.

Director Bex Baxter told the Bristol Post, "Everyone at Coexist respects the company and gives more than 100 percent to their work, so I don't think we will have an issue with people deceiving us."
This is an uncommon business practice throughout the world. In the U.S., most companies don't even offer paid maternity leave.
However, several Asian countries like Japan and Taiwan offer working women the ability to take a few paid days to a week off every month during their menstrual cycle.

- Canada announced it has officially surpassed its goal of resettling 25,000 refugees.
The government initiative, called #WelcomeRefugees, was announced back in late November. It came with a big budget and a small time table, but the country pulled it off.
As Jackie Northam said on NPR, Canadian citizens are partially to thank for the country’s success: "What’s remarkable is that about 10,000 are being resettled under a private sponsorship program. ... So we're seeing a lot of church groups and neighborhood groups, PTAs — things like that all across Canada are stepping up to help."
Here at home, things look a little different. Lawmakers across the U.S. are still working to block Syrian refugees from resettling in their states by denying the release of funding for programs that aid them.
Aid groups are fighting back, and on Monday a federal judge prevented Indiana’s governor from blocking funding for Syrians. Still, CNN reports more than half the nation’...

While the party carrying out the airstrikes is still unknown, the Saudi foreign minister and anti-regime groups are saying Russia and the Syrian regime are to blame.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claims warplanes attacked the country's northern region near Aleppo, the southern Hama region and Raqqa — a disputed city and ISIS stronghold.
Russian media says Syrian rebel groups could be to blame for attacks on Damascus.
The United Nations backed a temporary cease-fire between the U.S., Russia, Syria's regime and rebel groups –– but it doesn't include terrorist groups.

The temporary agreement means a cease-fire between the regime and Syrian rebels, as well as countries like the U.S. and Russia conducting airstrikes toward those groups.
ISIS and other terrorist groups are not included in the agreement.
"There are plenty of reasons for skepticism, and even under the best of circumstances, the violence will not end right away. But everyone knows what needs to happen," President Barack Obama said.
One of the main goals of this truce is to help the United Nations and other aid groups get access to besieged towns and bring food and other necessities to Syrian civilians.
On Friday, Russia reportedly ramped up airstrikes in Syria, at first making it unclear if the country would follow the cease-fire.
While Western countries have called for Syrian president Bashar al-Assad to step down, Russia has largely supported his regime. But, at least for this ceasefire, the U.S. appears t...

But there's a catch. Earlier this week, Guzmán's attorney told a Mexican radio show that the cartel leader may be willing to waive extradition and plead guilty if he serves time at a medium security prison in the U.S.
This might be a hard sell considering the drug lord has escaped from maximum security prisons in Mexico — twice.
Part of Guzmán's change of mind is his treatment at the prison where he's currently held. According to his lawyer, Guzmán is allegedly being woken up regularly to confirm he hasn't fled, something that's causing him migraines.
While he is wanted in the U.S. on multiple charges, Guzmán has several life sentences to serve in Mexico, which is why he hadn't been extradited before.

France is demolishing part of the Calais migrant camp. One of Europe's largest shanty towns, it's known as "The Jungle."
A court order calls for police to evict migrants in the southern part of the camp. The government says up to 1,000 migrants will be affected. Activists say the number could be three times as high.
Currently, the camp houses refugees who fled war-torn countries including Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq.
Many hope to cross the English Channel and settle in Britain.
In the meantime, a mini-economy has sprung up. The camp includes restaurants, a school, a church — even a nightclub.
France says it will work with aid groups to move the migrants to a nearby park or converted shipping containers.
Aid groups say that's not a solution for the estimated 300 unaccompanied children living there.
French authorities say the eviction process will be "gradual."

The U.S. and Russia have reportedly agreed on a cease-fire in Syria. Ideally, this means that Russia will stop bombing the Syrian opposition and that the Syrian opposition and Syrian regime will stop fighting each other. But that's only if the cease-fire actually holds up.

- Peacocks Die At Chinese Zoo After Being Roughly Handled For Selfies - Newsy
- Runtime

- Date posted
- Description
- Visitors at the Yunnan Wild Animal Park reportedly hugged and even plucked feathers from two of the zoo's peacocks, which eventually died.
Transcript:
Two peacocks at a Chinese zoo have died from shock after being handled "violently" by visitors trying to take selfies with them.
Peacocks aren't known to approach people, and a representative for the Yunnan Wild Animal Park told a Chinese outlet workers had warned tourists not to touch the birds.
But visitors reportedly ignored the warning, hugging the peacocks and even plucking their feathers. One bird died within a half hour of being handled.
Many see the incident as another example of a photo opportunity going too far. A rare dolphin in Argentina recently died after it was taken out of the water so beachgoers could snap selfies with it.
The peacocks reportedly died Feb. 12, but news of the incident is just now beginning to spread. So far, the zoo hasn't filed any charges.

- London Mayor Backs UK's Exit From The European Union - Newsy

- Description
- The U.K. is playing a "should we stay or should we go" game with the European Union. And as of Sunday, London Mayor Boris Johnson officially said, "We should go."
Johnson, who has kept mum about the issue for months, addressed a crowd of reporters Sunday outside his home, where he called for the country to cut ties with the EU.
"The last thing I wanted was to go against David Cameron or the government, but after a great deal of heartache, I don't think there’s anything else I can do. I will be advocating 'Vote Leave,'" Johnson told reporters.
Johnson's announcement comes just two days after U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron secured a deal with EU leaders to temporarily keep the U.K. as a member state and just hours after Cameron appeared on a talk show and asked the mayor for his support.
"I would say to Boris what I say to everybody else: We will be safer, stronger, we will be better off inside the EU," David Cameron told BBC's Andrew Marr.

- Description
- On Sunday, Pope Francis reiterated his view on the death penalty and called for better standards at correctional facilities.
Transcript:
Pope Francis wants to get rid of the death penalty internationally and encouraged governments to follow on Sunday.
"All Christians and people of good will are called today to work ... for the abolition of the death penalty," Pope Francis said.
In addition to this call, the pope said he wants correctional facilities to have better standards for conditions and the treatment of prisoners.
These sentiments of the Catholic Church are nothing new.
When the pope spoke to the U.S. Congress in September he also urged legislators to consider an abolishment.
"I am convinced that this way is the best, since every life is sacred, every human person is endowed with an inalienable dignity, and society can only benefit from the rehabilitation of those convicted of crimes," Pope Francis said.

- A Boiling River In Peru Is So Hot, It Cooks Anything That Falls In - Newsy
- Runtime
- 0:53
- Date posted
- Description
- The river, fed by hot and boiling springs, runs at high temperatures for almost 4 miles.
Long ago, ancient Amazonians discovered a river in Peru where the water is so hot that it boils.
The local indigenous people consider the river a sacred site. Geoscientist Andrés Ruzo is the first to get permission to study it.
"The river flows wider than a two-lane road for most of its path. It flows hot for 6.24 kilometers," Ruzo said in a 2014 TED talk.
Ruzo discovered the river's temperature ranges from 80 degrees Fahrenheit to more than 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
Hot and boiling springs feed into the river.
Parts of the river are so hot that if an animal falls in, it's cooked to death.
Ruzo believes if deforestation in the region continues, the river could be in danger.
